Front door, house wall and trims

We're wanting to go with a red front door (Red Alert) but I'm very stuck on what colours to choose for the exterior walls of house and trims. Ideas would be great. At the moment it's a ugly green colour for trims and a creamy colour for the walls, as you can see from the photos.

Hi Cara, will you be painting your roof also? If so, it opens up a myriad of pairings but if not, I’d choose a deep bottle green for the trim and a very pale sand (not cream, not quite terracotta. Think light sandstone pavers) for the cladding. But I’d also recommend you not take my advice but speak to the colour consultant at a specialist paint store AND do a large spot test in a couple of different places. Also take the time to view the test areas at different times and if possible, different weather conditions. There’s a science to colour but also an art, and like art, if it makes your heart sing, that’s the colour/art for you, with the proviso that you do have a responsibility to your neighbours 😉

Thanks for these fabulous comments! After reading them all we think we will definitely leave the red brick and replace the red wood with monument. We will add eaves across the front and will get a price on roof restoration with paint to match monument compared to reroofing in monument. Adding a double skillion carport to the front is a great idea too. We will definitely replace concrete with new as its old and cracked. The drive will have to curve in due to the water metre location right next to the letter box and a cost of over $2000 to move it. The garden definitely needs an upgrade. We have done a little bit out the front, not a great photo but I've attached a more recent one, we are thinking we will leave the bigger trees in this photos and add kangaroo paws through out. Front has been neglected a bit due to other renovations out the back. Nearly time to attack the front! Thanks again, we really appreciate all your thoughts! I'll post some photos once we get underway. I've added some of what we did out the back with the original 70's look we had. Been fun and hard work. All the work was done by ourselves and our sons.

This is a 12 acre block, long driveway leading up to house. We want to see the house as you approach. The drive then splits to left for sheds and horse yards and right to garage.

Painting Doors and Trims Same Colour As Walls, Bad Idea?

Hi Brett about 5 to 10 years ago the trend was if your design style was contemporary your trim colour was the same as the walls and if your design style was classic your trim was a lighter, often white contrast to the wall colour. These days the trend is to the latter regardless of your design style as your builder's designers suggested. However matching your trim colour to the walls is still a good option if you have 8' ceilings. As there is minimal difference (only in the level of sheen) between the skirting boards and wall colour it makes the ceiling look higher. Another option is to do the trim in a similar but lighter tone such as Dulux Grey Pebble quarter. This is a very subtle tone on tone look. Whatever the colour, do you have a choice in the sheen level for your trim? I generally recommend semi gloss enamel on trim unless you are after a more classic look and your woodwork is in very good condition (the higher the sheen level the more any imperfections show up), in which case you could consider full gloss enamel. At the end of the day it's your home so you should do what you'd prefer - after all it's only paint so it's easily changed! All the best with your build.

You could try a grey colour scheme with your red door, or white with monument, outdoor awning would look great, getting advice from a colour consultant at the paint shop is a great idea and they can give good advice and put together colours that compliment your house .

I think white tones for the house with darker trim with a darker roof. Example of thoughts in the photo attached.

Any of the inspiration pics above would work with your red front door AND not require the repainting of the roof. The current roof is a great neutral colour for a roof. If it’s in good condition don’t waste money and add maintenance by painting it.
