Renovating Bathrooms Design Dilemma

Shower close to window, building code restrictions? 7

Hi all

I am struggling for a new and better layout for my bathroom. I want to relocated the shower to near the window to provide better natural lighting and make the vanity the first thing you see as you walk-in. The issue I have is standard bases are all 900mm wide and I only have 730-760mm to play with depending on which side of the window you’re I’d look to put the shower.

I am posting photos of current and proposed layouts. I would love any feedback.

Also, does anyone know if there are any building code restrictions on putting showers next to windows in Melbourne, Victoria?

You would need to replace window to create a waterproof internal barrier - flashing etc. you will need to strip plaster on wall to waterproof shower. I would suggest making window smaller to address issue if you want shower there

I’d address the window making it higher and you want to address privacy, could put up and external screen. This layout has a bigger vanity. I think your proposed vanity is just too small unless this is a guest bath only.

Hi there - a few things stand out to me... yes keep bedroom sizes no less than 3000mm wide, offset the door to the laundry so you can't see the toilet from the front door - yuk! Minimise/simplify number of piers by turning front porch 90º. Keep the footprint as simple as possible. With oklouise's plan, which i think makes more sense, cut 300mm into each of the bedrooms and push out towards the left into the deck. Much better use of space. If west is to the left put a whole wall of cupboards along in bed 1 and get rid of the others, and add door out to deck on the (new) north wall. Do you really need a bath? Living in country they are wasteful of water even if it goes back onto your land. Alternatively have a combined shower/bath? Babies and toddlers wash quite well in the laundry tub then learn to shower with you or on their own quite happily. I'd make the shower a big bigger (and the cupboard on the hall side) and get rid of the bath. Make sure you have excellent insulation in walls, ceiling and under floor. Consider hebel panels as flooring (also, the reinforced ones span great distances) and walls for both fire safety and insulation value. If possible look for ramp potential in case of disability and also for getting furniture into house. If you're in a fire zone make sure all windows and doors comply with your zone rating. And if you are building high up on piers make the external cladding is something that never needs painting and is minimal maintenance.

Sorry to continue....the plan by Louise on the 20/01/2017.... But the laundry ( with internal access or through cloak room) and ensuite to the rear of the garage the master behind...... Then a Wir separating the master form the living or a bathroom...... The a fireplace if required against the western wall central in the house.... The entrance and small cloak room for the winter woollies against the garage and the other three beds at the front RHS with bath near.... The lounge/ kitchen/ dining in a similar layout but with minimal a walls blocking the view from the entry to the living/kitchen .... I like at lease a small wall dividing the living and lounge for the teenagers also.... If I get an chance I will sketch something up. Good luck this the paperwork... Plans are the fun part.

Hi, Just a few quick tips to take or leave: -The nook will need some form of natural light & ventilation such as a skylight (you may already be aware). -You mentioned you wanted a slab on ground for thermal reasons. You would actually lose a lot of heat with an uninsulated slab on ground in Ballarat. Insulated underneath it and the thermal mass would be of benefit, but the general advice that a slab on ground will allow thermal mass to couple with the earth for a constant temperature would not work in Ballarat (unless you want it to be constantly cold) -Otherwise your plan has a lot of positives and you've put your thermal mass wall & fire to the north so you could also use it to store the heat from the sun via windows. I think there is a little wasted space which could be improved between the kitchen and N/E living area caused by the 'long & skinny' shaped living and island bench... Something which could be tweaked when you have your working drawings done? Or you could even take a metre out and push the kitchen/dining up to save some floor area (dollars) or add to other rooms.

Hi dear Siri....always investing so much time and thought into designs for everyone... thank you so very kindly :) I love the look of that! Seeing things in 3D really does bring it to life and make a plan just pop right up off the paper! Do you think the shower/toilet should be swapped to take advantage of the garden view? Otherwise the toilet gets the glory - and a little set of table and chairs would be looking back inside to the toilet? Or - could we do that idea off the shower/toilet side? From the dressing room down to the toilet? Make the dressing room smaller to accommodate a door into a small walled garden? Love your (and everyone else's) input as always :) xx

If you remove the shower wall and install a shower glass it will open up room without the high cost of window and plumbing changes

Keep layout the same but as mentioned change out shower frame for class. It's nice the have the natural light there for vanity

My vote for above too. Leave shower where it is and use glass to open up the room. Yes there are buildings restrictions for near a window, they mainly come under waterproofing and the “spray” area.

You can Google the code but not the Standard “The Building Code of Australia and Australia Standard 3740-2010 require that you waterproof the floor and shower recess at least 150mm inside shower walls, 1800mm up any vertical angles in the shower and 100m or more over the step down onto the bathroom floor. However, it's recommended that you go beyond the bare minimums to ensure that your bathroom is well protected.”

Can’t really tell by photos and you have not put individual measurements for bath etc. so my question is are you gaining a bigger bath by swapping to other side. Is this a priority? If yes, then swap over bath but leave shower where it is, with a half 1200mm high nib wall then glass to ceiling, and your vanity where the current bath is. The vanity taking up entire length between outside wall and nib wall. Don’t have any small gaps which are a pain to clean.

we've installed showers next to windows in four different bathrooms with waterproofing and tiles up the whole wall and around the window sill and reveals
