Sorry to start off critical , but boy , the colours are all over the place !

But here's the main question I'd start with -- you say the carport doesn't get used , BUT there's a car in it ! Basically , if you aren't using it , why do you need a driveway there at all ? I'm gathering 1 or a max of 2 cars , so maybe 1 in the garage , one in the right hand side black ( tarseal ? ) driveway . Then you can demolish the carport , dig up the driveway , do a fence across there . I'd say a rendered one to reflect and reference the house would be the go , and do it in the same colour as the house -- suddenly , you have gotten rid of about 8 colours from the driveway and carport .

But when you say you want a stone driveway ( when you already have a sealed black one the other side ) implies you actually do need/want a carport -- maybe you don't want all the colours ? If I was keeping the carport and/or the lefthand driveway , I'd get the drive sealed , and paint the carport to match the house -- having said that , some of the house needs a quick 'tune' -- the left side with the 3 windows looks to be a light blue , which doesn't suit the darker tones . If you are going grey , go grey . If going blue , go blue !

Even if you remove the car port I would leave the drive way and paint it black to match the other drive. It is always good to have more off street parking and if you remove it, the council may not approve the second vehicle crossing in the future

I second having an outside undercover area for kids. Chalk drawings, water paintings, outdoor kitchen, etc. It would be fabulous.

The carport is a good, hopefully council approved structure, which gives all year round cover for entertaining and children’s play. Leave it there, do not take down. Add a new fence with a walk through gate, or gate big enough for a vehicle. If you want to spend money on aggregate, then do that, making sure both driveways are the same and compliment the home. Is the brick pattern on left hand drive real bricks or stencilled concrete? Painting both driveways a dark colour would be a cost effective change.

It looks as though the carport is quite closed off to backyard although can only see cross-bracing at the end.  I like the suggestions others have made about trying to incorporate into back and fence in front.  

Can we see some photos of backyard and where the carport fits in for better ideas?

Our backyard is not very big and we definitely need more grassed area. We are not interested in turning it into another play area - we have accounted for various play spots in our landscaping that we will do.

In terms of the colours @User - yes, the gutters are waiting to be painted and we never painted the carport as we are getting rid of it - and likewise with the different colours in the driveway, that is part of this discussion - we either expose agg the driveway or get rid of it altogether.

There is a car in it as our garage is currently full of materials for our reno, but that will be cleared in a few weeks.

The photo doesn't really do the colours justice - it isn't blue, it is "Grey refection" (in saying that, aren't entirely impressed with the main render colour but will assess that once we have the gutters, driveway and landscaping completed.

We are definitely going to replace the black driveway on the right with an exposed agg.

I guess what I am asking is not about whether we should/shouldn't remove the carport - we definitely are.

My question is more about whta to do with that extra driveway and how we finish it off - are we best just spending the money and putting another driveway in that will end up really as just an expensive space for friends to park their car? And will that look weird ending into nothing but a fence?

Or if we remove the driveway/crossover altogether, would it look a bit bare if we just grassed that area?

Off street parking is always a major bonus. Keep the driveway on the left and do both in aggregate.

@dreamer - you don't think it would look weird with it ending up against a fence with likely plants in front?

I've been scouring the internet for photos of houses with 2 driveways (or extra wide frontage) and how they finish it and struggling to find anything.

New fence with planting on road side, aggregate drive to match home. I would still install a gate in new fence.

@dreamer - that's what we were thinking. The gate was originally in our conversations, but our problem with adding gate is that it means that we can't really add plants or bushes on both sides of the fence.

I would leave a single width 2.8mwide drive say 0.6-1m off fence to a gate for rear access. That is valuable. But it could be grass not paved for time being. I assume you are keeping the house for a i while so really do what you want. That way if you need access to maintain pool or do extension etc is there

Most councils won't approve a second driveway/ vehicle crossing, which might explain why you're struggling to find examples. It's also why I'd be reluctant to remove it. ( Before you tear it up, check with council that a replacement will be allowed.)

In older suburbs where garages aren't common, there are plenty of driveways ending at hedges, fences, or the front of the house and it looks fine.

Such a waste of a good feature it's the most attractive of both driveways, could you turn the garage into interior space

I'd probably just keep the driveway up to a certain point (ie big enough to park a car if needed) and return the rest of it all to landscaping. 

I suppose it's too big a carport to sell???

Instead of a garage sale , you could have a carport sale . . . . . . . . . .

I agree with CP. I love exploring our new neighbourhood and this is precisely the idea that a nearby new landscaping project used with beautiful and useful effect. After removing the carport and top part of the driveway, you could carry the hedging across to enclose the backyard, perhaps planting in front of cyclone fencing to make the backyard secure. Another shade tree or two may be useful for outdoor play and to encourage bird life. Our neighbours actually built a beautiful stone wall (and in time the new plantings will soften this feature) and the roadside part of the driveway has been retained for visitor parking.
