Using this recess?

What do I do oth this weird space in my lounge? The plan says it is a TV recess, but it is 101cm deep and 160cm wide, with windows either side. It is too deep for the TV and pushing the TV back cuts off viewing. We contemplated a fireplace but don't want to burn the TV or have it mounted uncomfortably high. The blue lines are the windows, the red lines show a floor to ceiling opening into the entry foyer. Yellow is couches, large ottoman and bookcase, all of which can change. What do we do? Just wall half of the recess off?! Build a panic room?! Help please.

You needed that depth for the OLD TV's, perhaps it would be good to post floor plans of both floors to help with suggestions

I'm guessing it's meant to be a robe recess. I would just call a wardrobe installer and get a quote for built in storage, eg. Drawers, hanging, TV space, shelves, whatever. They will help with your design and you can never have too much storage. It's only a quote, free ideas and you may be pleasantly surprised with the price.

Hi iggs85. I see your point re cost and how you think it may look. I'll attach a photo of one of my semi-recessed basins in stone. We had to use semi-recessed due to space restrictions as well. The benches are 440. Are yours narrower? I did Google stone benchtop offcuts. eBay has some in marble and granite. There appear to be businesses that do sell offcuts. Anyway, I think you would certainly be able to find a beautiful laminate you like. There is such a wide range. There are also some that look so much like stone. Will you have vanity cabinets/drawers under the benchtop? If so, what are your thoughts there? Same laminate or different? Have you visited any shops yet to look at samples?

What a strange little recess! I would disguise it altogether or make a feature out of it. Maybe paint it a feature color and put a tall house plant or a retro macrame hanging plant to obscure the angles. Or put one of those hanging chairs there? Or line it with mirror to make it appear to lead through to another area. Shelves with mirror backing always look great. Another thing you could do is place a ceiling to floor wall hanging there to conceal it and use the space behind to store the vacuum cleaner and other junk. Your renovations are well underway, so after seeing the small floor plan and that the vanity is on an internal wall and you apparently still want the Shaving Cabinet. Having cavity brick walls I would get your brickie to remove a section of the brick wall so that the shaving cabinet can be recessed back into the cavity, this will overcome any concerns you have about bumping your head, this opening can then be patched along with other walls. I would take all of your photos and measurements to someone like Reece to pick a hand basin to fit,, I would also keep in mind that if say the width of the vanity is around 900 the shaving cabinet would match that width and you would end up with say 2 x 450 mirrored doors, which puts the mirror join in the middle and in your face when using the vanity. cheers

Single level, no second story. Pony wall in this plan does not exist. Where to put the TV if the alcove is full?

It could become a Bar with the TV on the opposite wall

Build a false wall to narrow the depth of the alcove. Build inbuilt lower cabinetry or cabinetry with book/display shelves.

Just 1 query -- you say its a metre wide and 1.6 deep ? Thats really deep , but also looking at the 2 plans you've posted , they both look like it might be maybe 1 metre wide and 600mm deep or so ?

How far between the window edges ? I wonder if you do say drawers or cupboards from ground level up to say 600 tall . and maybe further up too , and then put your TV basically mounted across the gap , so theres a 'hole' behind the TV ? I'm pretty sure you can get 2 vertical TV mounting rails that should tie into the outer edges of your TV too , so mounting should be easy , as would be connecting aerial etc ?

Hi Deb Deb, looks like it was originally intended to be a fireplace space either to allow for a future installation or it just didn't get installed.

Does your bookcase fit in the space? If so, the cheapest option is to put that in there and hang the TV where your bookcase currently is. Otherwise, you could purchase a low joinery unit for storage and put the TV on that towards the front or you could get something purpose built for the space. At a metre deep you could store any number of things, games, jigsaws etc, whatever you are into as a family. Again, sit the TV on this and even build in overhead shelves or cupboards too.

Thanks dreamer , for some reason i misread it and it got me confused haha . And a reply to @CHRISTINE HALL ARCHITECTS LTD -- I think Siriuskey further up deduced it was likely to be for one of those old tube type TVs , as it was called a TV recess on the plans .
