Before and After: Bathroom Transformation

Here Studio was engaged for architectural services from Concept Design through to Contract Administration for this extension to a Victorian house in Daylesford.

Living in Richmond, and planning a tree change, the owners approached us to help them to modernise the whole house from a rental, into a place for them to live in. The goal was to design a comfortable home that would satisfy their previous expectations of modern living and comfort in the city, yet maximise the health and wellbeing experience of being in the country – natural light and fresh air.

The current house was dark and has a poor connection to the South facing backyard through a series of poorly designed lean-tos. Designed during COVID19 lockdown, we worked closely with the clients on Zoom, through a series of workshops sharing sketches and precedent images for look and feel.

Before:

The strategy of the renovation was to make smart and logical decisions for the new house layout to manage the restrained budget and make the most of the existing.

The bathrooms transformation we undertook are good examples of this logic : we kept the main bathroom in its initial spot but fully transformed it. The ensuite was placed where the old kitchen was.

After:

The palette was inspired by the owners wish of a simple and modern atmosphere, with great views to the outdoors.

Looks lovely. But I am too stiff to reach a toilet roll on the wall behind me.

This looks great. Our bathroom had the same layout, but we managed to fit a much longer bath and a toilet in by moving the vanity from under the window to the left hand wall, putting the longer bath under the window, putting a toilet where the bath was previously and leaving the shower in the same position. We also changed the door to a cavity sliding door to take up less space in the room. We had a similarly awful 80s renovation in ours too, and used the same sort of wall tile

Thanks Kate! The LED lighting in the mirror is great for dull days when a guest may want to apply make up. The lighting is even and warm. Good question!

The tiles are just so so bland , and look the same in the 2 bathrooms . Everything is on the boring end of the so so generic scale . Basically , there is no character at all IMO .

Doing 2 tones of tiles , personally i would have binned those ones , but if you used them , how about going a metre up the wall in that tone , then going a brown or charcoal to the roof ? Maybe a row of subways around the middle to break it . Even subways done vertically , just to add interest ?

The vanities look similar to the $199 ones ( including the basin ) I put in rental properties , as do the toilets . Mirrors -- not those ones for me . And the second photo -- I was assuming thats the en-suite , but not sure , looks like the shower has not splash glass ?

Both have the vibe of a repurposed pantry . So you can probably guess I'm not a fan . I realise it may be what the customer wanted , or could afford , but it does seem cheap but not so cheerful sorry .

On the plus side both bathrooms are a good size with plenty of space which will be good for the owners as they age and may need assistance. They were working with a limited budget so the fittings look OK to me, it's just the position of the Toilets that let it down for me. Your clients are moving to a lovely area in Victoria and into a lovely house designed to suit them.
