Ideas for 1960s brick house

Hi everyone, was hoping that you could give me some ideas to modernise this 1960s brick and terracotta tile Brisbane house? Originally I wanted to paint/clad/render the brick and paint the roof, but ive since been convinced to not paint/render the brick as it wont look good as it will flake/fade and end up looking bad. Ive also been convinced to not paint the terracotta roof as it is such a good building material, even though I am not a fan of the orange colour! Essentially that is my problem, I really am not a fan of the orange tones of this house! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Was it originally that brick in the 60s? Looks like it’s been added later.

Good eye! It was originally a single storey, but the previous owners raised it in the 1980s so im assuming they rebricked it then

We have a 1960 brick veneer, ours is a Colac brick with a fair amount of variation in the colour, more an overall light orange, with the brown terracotta roof tiles. Very funny as we have trades come to the door wanting to clean the tiles, I tell them I love the mossy look. We have the wooden windows painted with 'orange scent' (a creamy colour) and then added a heritage style pergola all along the front and side with grapevines and wisteria. posts and fretwork painted with 'Native grass' paint colour- softened it down and beautified the frontage wonderfully. When we did an extension we thought about rendering but decided to keep the brick look. We took 12 months to source new and old bricks to match the original- looks great.

Lovely colours ect. But my question is why is we read article after article on kitchen designs with advice from designers stating never to put a dishwasher in a corner as it is not practical. Articles always state that it should never block access to another cupboard and if possible access from both sides. First thing I noticed in the picture was the dishwasher. As an owner I would not be happy with this design by a professional. But this is just my opinion

Hi Ash we had the same dilemma, I love our red brick house but many bricks were damaged and the cost of replacing them with newer like coloured bricks and mortar was costly and risky as there was a high chance they wouldnt match the old bricks. We decided to render our house in the end and are happy with the result! We went for an acrylic render in a Resene Triple thorndon cream colour. The colour started off a little green but now one month in its a nice cream greyish colour which works well in our South East facing house. Now we are onto our landscaping and will replace our garage door. We also cleaned our roof - I suggest doing that first and that will help give you an idea on render colours.

I took notice this morning and it would be a shame to lose it. I did attempt to paint and tidy up the door a few weeks back but I feel like the colour is all wrong. It’s not bright enough. And I think I’ll have the glass replaced and frosted. Thanks lots of great ideas to work with here

You could always paint all trims a dark colour, even garage door, add a tall hedge under window to balance the look,‘viburnum emerald lustre’ would look beautiful, add a new black setting or paint what you have, minimal update for beautiful modern effect.

Thanks Julie! That does look really nice. I did have my heart set on something lighter, but this would definitely be less maintenance!

You could check with a dulux colour consultant for advice and ideas, there are so many colours that would suit your bricks. I think the darker colours will give a dramatic modern update, but choose a colour that you love and that compliments your lovely home .
