As soon as you get rain , or even just humidity , it will be slipperier , both for people and vehicles .
I assume the concrete is discoloured and or chipping -- if the base is good , I'd be tempted to get the whitest cement you can ( whether it is readymixed or you get that readycrete that you mix in a barrow etc ) and do a layer over the existing concrete , probably 1cm or so it will set hard , but less likely to crack .
You'd probably also get away with a very easy kerbing from stiff cardboard with wooden pegs 'behind' it , following the existing concrete -- it won't be exerting too much pressure .
Paint isn't anything but paint , and will always look painted -- look at those survivor houses with painted front steps ( they seemed to be either red or grey back then ) -- they weren't great then , aren't now , will always look dated IMO .
While it still won’t last forever, if you put a coat of bondcrete on your driveway before painting it you will get much better adhesion. I get what pottsy is saying but I still think a painted driveway will look much better than a 1950s concrete driveway!
