Dilemma: Should we build a verandah?

Should we build a new 9x4m verandah along our deck?
Here are the facts:
▪︎It'd be purely for birthdays etc- no more than around 2 times a year
▪︎ We currently have a small 3 bedroom 50s house and can't fit many people inside unless it's a small family dinner. For parties people are outside on the open deck and backyard on a sunny day. On a rainy day people are in the back room, photo attached. This is where people were for xmas this year as it was raining. We can fit 40 people here easily. Everyone loved being in the back room on Xmas.
▪︎We currently have a 3x4m verandah in the photo on the deck which we use
▪︎We hosted a party on a sunny day in the past and it was great, people were able to move around the backyard, back room and small verandah
▪︎ In 10 years we will most likely be extending our house so the verandah will have to go
So, is it worth building a verandah to use for parties a few times a year if it is raining, for the next ten years before we extend?

once a covered verandah is built you may find that it gets used more than you expect and a very basic structure can be economical (and easily removed and relocated) and well within the skills of most handy people... i would always prefer a sheltered spot to sit outside in hot and/or cold weather but which direction will the verandah face? and if it will stop winter sunshine from inside consider using alternating panels of transluscent roofing

You have a lovely outdoor area, the use of outdoor umbrella’s I love them, apart from looking great they give you the shelter you are after , one, two or one large one, is all you need for outdoor coverage, plus you can put them down to add light to the room, alternatively a retractable awning could work or a shade sail.

From your drawings I leaned towards squaring off the arches but seeing the house IRL I say keep them. Being raised from the road and the way the house is perceived to sit into the land, they look great. There is a graciousness to the arches which you don't often see in houses of this era, I think it because they are not uniform. I would look at the Spanish Mission style homes in Palm Springs for inspiration and keep the roof tiles rather than go colourbond too. You can still do a version of beach just more Spanish mission hacienda style!

Thank you for your great ideas and photos. I love the concept and have been thinking about this idea also even a basic series of large timber frames to line the path. I really do need the shelter though so I pretty much want exactly what you suggest. A raised, almost floating verandah roof starting from the inside cutout of the roofline (to get height) and angled down to match the garage/stone wall but yes 600mm or so gap and say timber lined with nice chunky timber post or even stone based posts. My worry was would this look out of place in what is a simple country home and the best way to finish it off and "ground" the structure so it looks like it belongs to the original building. It is doable I'm sure but I don't want it to look odd either. The devil is in the detail so they so. Thanks again for your thoughts and ideas.

Please excuse this quick dodgy recolour , but just wanted to show the difference some kind of contrast would add to the effect of the exterior. Whether it is painting the roof (because it is such a big part of the facade), rendering or painting the bricks or refinishing the windows in black or white, something to let the architectural features is the key to sprucing up the outside. I think someone mentioned adding a verandah too. That would depend on how much light already comes through the front. I can imagine one of the windows on the side being transformed into french doors leading to a lovely flagstoned garden. I love the black and white interior photos someone posted above too. anything to bring some contrast to all that mud coloured brick. What an inspiring project to have ahead of you, so many possibilities! I wish this were my little house :)))

I'd be different , and wouldn't go too dark -- I'd almost consider a light grey or a sandstone or even a very light green/grey as the main colour , with the windows and shutters in the crisp white . Boring eh ? THEN though , I'd do the gutters and garage door in the brightest red or orange or yellow -- that balances out the crisp white features . And then , I'd do a largish sloping pergola about twice the width of the front veranda entrance( basically about as wide as the edge of the windows -- maybe 4-5metres , and coming out around 2 metres . The higher edge would be above that 'break' line , and therefore camoflauge that . Personally , I'd do it in a nice mid red type stain ( or use a rich timber and varnish it ) , but charcoal would work and contrast too . I'd levae the bricks , waterblast the drive , add a couple of big glossy terracotta pots ( maybe 1metre or more tall ) in the same colour as your gutterings , with cactus or similar -- these can even be added later as budget permits . Depending on your skills , it would be pretty budget ( maybe under $10K ? ) but it would really lift the look . Just an idea .

Hi Belinda, I think it will depend entirely on which direction this area faces. I notice the bathroom window there too: do you really want to encourage people to be sitting just outside the loo! Bit chummy as my Mum would have said! I would think more about the extension and what you want to do with that.... I can assist with this and then the outdoor space will become cleared too. Even if you do not build for a few years to know what you want to do is not throwing good money after bad. an umbrella might be a good stop gap and you can always move then about to where you need them. I like the look of your back garden: lots of green and spacious. Cheers, Margot
