We have a shower with a single pane of glass and no door. It’s works perfectly and I love it. We made our opening only 500mm which is plenty and helps reduce splash. Yes, a bit of water does spray a little onto the floor tiles but not a problem in our bathroom layout. If our water pressure was super strong it might be more of an issue. We have a linear drain under the shower head than spans the width, with the whole shower area falling towards it slightly. Nice and neat with no awkward diagonal tile cuts. Every time I see a photo of that layout with the freestanding bath within the shower area I immediately think how dirty the bath would constantly look. I wouldn’t do it for that reason.

Hi Simona, My bathroom has the same L shape and window layout as yours (although my space is smaller and has 2 doors - the bathroom has direct access to an adjacent bedroom as well as to the main passage of the house). After much trial and error when planning the bathroom remodel about 4 years ago, I decided for a shower over bath (I wanted the largest bath possible) and ran the bath underneath the window. I am attaching a very rough (not to scale) plan of my bathroom. I am really happy with the layout of the bathroom - it is certainly a million times better than the old layout which had a smaller bath running along the shortest back wall and the toilet closer to the door. I think that you might be able to have a seperate shower facing the door (where I have a tall open storage unit) if you wanted. I also found that product choice was equally as important as layout. I opted for a white colour scheme with lots of chrome, glass and mirrors to bounce the light around the bathroom and to make it feel bigger and to playdown the odd L shape of the room. I also tried to use the walls as much as possible to maximise circulation space. I also used the same largish white rectangular tiles (laid lengthwise in brick pattern) on both the floor and walls - this really helps to visually “stretch” and unify the space and make the bathroom feel bigger than it is. As the main bathroom door opens to the centre of my house, I also wanted the bathroom to look attractive (and not “bulky”) from that doorway. Finally, I also hung an outside mirror on the fence facing the bathroom window and put in a wall garden on an adjacent outside wall. I hope that this helps a little with your thinking. Good luck!

Kate: - I like the idea of a door at both ends of the new central bedroom doorway - maybe some kind of thin sliding door or a foldable shutter door might be best? - house can’t be knocked down/rebuilt due to location in a heritage conservation area OkLouise: - thanks again for doing this - I’ve loved all of your updates, they are so well thought out and hope to incorporate them all into the build - will send you a token of appreciation when the build is finished! - we have already been thinking about whether to rotate the kitchen island 90 degrees as you have drawn - i think it might look weird? but i’m not sure - theres a lot for us to process with your new updates so we'll need to spend some time thinking about them! - i’m resistant to reducing the size of study 2 as that’s the most important room for me as i will spend a lot of time there and it is doubling as a work productivity office/man cave so really want that room to be fantastic! - i thought the laundry chute was above the laundry but will need to ask the architect Siriuskey - I also think there may be too many bathrooms in the house - due to the good location of the property i think it is hard (within reason) to overcapitalise on the property so believe it will grow well in value in the long run so would rather overdo it than underdo it - FWIW the other houses in the street/adjacent streets are kind of similar to our proposed plan so its not out of keeping with the area - am still wondering about combining the downstairs powder room/adjacent en suite into one big bathroom for a bath - variable number of family members staying but 4 to 11 over 3 generations at various times of the year - the plan for the mudroom is for it to be the entrance into the house that we use most so it can also act as a cloak room too so that’s why its not near the laundry - i don’t want a lift in the house as it seems unnecessary for our needs and fi we ever ended up in a situation where we needed a lift we would just sell and downsize Dreamer: - i think we (parents) might end up living downstairs when the kids get older/noisier - they are in primary school currently Pleased to Bijou design - point taken about number of bathrooms - i don’t really have a good answer Paul Di Stafano & Dr Retro - i can sense and empathise with your professional frustrations :) - thanks for the good luck wishes, I agree we’ll need it - fortunately I’m a lifelong/relentless optimist and things always seem to work out ok in the end (and if they don’t, I’ll take it as a positive learning experience) - thanks for the insights into dodgy busy practice business models mummagabz - thanks for comment about small robes - will look into making them larger

that's a relief i thought you meant two sinks for the washing machine and a third for hands! my suggestions includes a separate laundry cupboard with either a drop in skinny tub with underbench washer or stacked washer and dryer with skinny tub and bifold door, a double walk in shower with grab rails and low down taps that can be reached from outside with an overhead and handheld shower for showering while seated...rotate and raise the toilet higher for a little more comfort and privacy and add a grab rail with integral toilet roll holder, wall hung vanity for easy access for extra towels, toilet paper and toiletries and so slippers, floor mats, waste bins and scales etc can be under the vanity out of the way when necessary, mirror doored wall cabinets and an extra shelf could be extended across over the top of the vanity and toilet for more counter area and there's just enough room for a small shower chair (used inside and out of the shower and much better and cheaper than fixed shower seat), several easy access locations for towels and don't forget clothes hooks on the back of the door
