Pergola or similar.

All suggestions for a pergola (or similar) for the paved area at the rear of this historic rural property are welcome. The courtyard faces west, and the sun belts into the 'sunroom' in the afternoon. There are multiple roof lines and many windows and doors to accomodate. The owner would like an alfresco area with some overhead protection and some sun protection for the western wall/windows without relying on blinds or curtains. Approximate dimensions are 5 x 9 metres. The structure must be heritage-sympathetic for this Federation-era homestead.

It’s a beautiful house. I’d extend the paving and then not have the pergola attached to the house. A stand alone structure with a pitched roof to mimic the original house would still shade the windows/sunroom but not have the complications of the varying roof lines and window heights.

Detached is good. And, pitched like the two gables facing the yard? I hadn't thought of extending the paved area, but I guess that might be needed to get the proportions right. Thank you for your prompt reply :)

It would be quite difficult to do skillion in a corner. If you are worried about fat on wood you can buy specific fat absorbing mats for under barbecues. We bought one for our webber from barbecues Galore in WA, but I am sure any barbecue shop would sell them. It has kept the fat off out new deck. I really like the look of your idea for your pool. Lovely house

The building you like has great timber accents: could you add a stained timber outdoor pergola or similar? In Tassie, maybe a glassed in area (for winter sun) with great ceiling height timber window frames? The pergola could go on the side near where the cars are parked. On the opposite side of the house, (left side of photo) and depending on where north is, maybe the glassed in area. In the photo it looks like there is bushland/valley falling away. If so, what a place to sit behind glass and watch the changes in the weather! These two areas would add living space for both summer and winter. And - then greenery of course.

I had a client with a similar low pergola, that was in quite good condition, but didn't have adequate slope for drainage, and felt quite oppresive as it was so low. As part of a much larger renovation I designed a soaring, butterfly roof structure to sit on top of the existing pergola with a generous box gutter down the centre. One "wing" of the butterfly overlaps the original tiled roof, but is about 600mm above the tiles. This makes it possible to clean the original gutter fairly easily. This overlap is enough to keep most of the rain out, apart from when it gets really windy and rainy at the same time. Photo below is original pergola structure: Photos taken during construction, before polycarbonate roofing installed: The final result has a lovely, light and airy feeling, and doesn't trap the hot air like your standard flat roofs that are tied into the existing eave. The house looks as though it is missing a verandah between the two "out buildings", it could be a narrow verandah matching the angle of the roof of the two small extensions or one to to cover from above the doors and matching the lower roof line. Federation houses had wonderful verandahs, ours did and with this facing West it would be helpful. A few clear panels would help with light back into the house. A rough Idea.

Hello Annie, I think a pergola with the exposed rafter ends would look great. cover with clear the doors that are most often used and plant grape vine for the winter sun and warmth and summer shade. Excellent: it is beautiful: love the high ceilings and detailing. So comfy! Enjoy Margot
