Congrats on the purchase, Tayla. Love those high ceilings. My first question is what style appeals to you? Are you enamoured with coastal/hamptons with its light and bright aesthetic, moody traditional, colourful mid century, a variation or something completely different? Does maximalism make you shudder or minimalism feel bleak? Would you quail at the idea of painting one millimetre of the timber or have you quietly considered painting the whole damn lot of it? No right or wrong answer (she says through gritted teeth at the thought of living in a maximalist home 😉). Alternatively, do you have an art piece, furniture item or inspiration item that you love and want to showcase?

For me cohesiveness is what, no matter the style, “makes” a space. Whatever your style, ensure your colour undertones are complementary. Aim for balance. If, just as an example, you paint your doors frames white, consider painting your window frames and, maybe, architraves the same colour and introduce other white furniture and/or fittings such as throws, floor rugs, vases - some solid white, some included white, some just a few specks but again with the same cool or warm undertone.

Before finalising, get sample pots, swatches and easy to return items and trial, trial, trial. Look at the colours in all kinds of lights and all times of day. Take your time, be prepared to have an unfinished look for a while, try to avoid the matchy, matchy look and don’t obsess over anything easily changeable.

It’s a lovely room, I’m sure whatever you choose it’ll only enhance it.

Very good ideas and words above. Start mood boards, plenty of images here on Houzz and Pintrest and plan the whole look. Painting while relatively cheap is still a cost so plan the whole look first.

I personally would be leaning towards a charcoal paint on all doors, architraves, frames etc etc. if my computer is showing your pine boards the correct colour, the white paint just seems to clash with the walls, the darker colours of your frames complements the pine walls. Even the white sheer curtains just don’t look correct. Maybe this is because they are against dark frames….mmmm . As above suggestions, a mood board of all the things you like, will generally dictate the end result. As you have said, the grand piano is dark and the fire is dark. Maybe that is your answer.

Think about what you want to feature - art work on walls or doors? The white doors brighten the place but artwork could, The pelmet box above the sliding door should match the architraves around the doors. If you want white doors try Natural White, among other suggestions. I do like the brighter white door than your other door and personally I prefer white doors and architraves. You could also have fun and go say lime green.

I was also thinking Natural White for doors, architraves, etc. When I read dreamer's comments about it clashing I wondered about something like a soft green instead. Buy sample pots and see what looks good to you. Think very hard about whether to paint your walls and ceilings. Once done it can't be undone. (Well, not without a lot of effort and expense.)
