I agree with the above. I think the TV will look a little odd with two tall cabinets on either side and nothing underneath. Also, where would you store/hide the DVD player, stereo, cords and whatever other bits and bobs you have for the TV? What were you hoping to achieve with the cabinets? Did you want space to display collectibles? Did you want to introduce the azure colour into the room?

I only mentioned the wood thing as I think your flooring is a fantastic statement piece in itself so would either maintain the tones up the wall or maximise it with simple white lines and lighting but I am a minimalist at heart! Not a professional designer and am simply just providing an opinion. Honestly the choice is yours as far as blending light and dark, just consider the tones with each as sometimes they clash - but if that's the look your going for than all good!! :-) Maybe just start by moving the TV to the wall - you'll see a huge difference in just that. Make sure you get the height right for the best viewing otherwise you'll kill your neck! It may be enough for you to reduce that 'bare' feeling your getting before doing anything else.

We built our house in 1975 and had a similar problem; A teeny tiny family room with too many doors. After several years of squeezing ourselves into this poorly functioning excuse of a "family" room, which has entrances in every corner bar one, plus an entry into the kitchen and sliding door to outside, in a fit of frustration, I decided that our under-utilised formal lounge/dining would be used as a living room with the TV, although we chose to keep the dining table in that room as it is a long narrow room. I made this change 26 years ago. The family room is now just a sitting area with one 2.5 seater couch and a side table at each end, no TV and is a great space for a few people to congregate in to keep the cook company or just to read. However it would have worked equally well with the dining table there. In any case, because of all the doorways, it is really just a walk-through area, but now feels spacious and "settled" instead of crowded and messy. I can recommend the change.....you will feel much less at "sixes and sevens" with your home.

(overlapping posts but doesn't change suggestions especially need for locations of doors and windows) to make space for a 55" TV i would swap rooms and make a media room with a wall of cabinets to include the TV, music, books etc and have a roomier dining room with extra small lounge chairs that can be rearranged when you need seating for more than 4 to watch TV..the lounge could be a sofa bed with a storage coffee table for bedding but best size and placement of all furniture depends on measurements and you will use an accurate plan of the whole apartment (including exact size and location of all doors and windows for choosing furniture, floor and window coverings, appliances, built ins, kitchen cabinets etc etc so if you can make a rough plan showing the distance from the windows and doors to all corners i can make a more accurate plan for you
