It is a bit confusing when it comes to leather - there's terminology like "aniline" and "natural grain bovine" ...which can make sofa shopping even more frustrating. Hi Kathy, so thrilled to hear my comments got you started thinking of the big picture, it has been a pleasure working with this. When you are starting totally from scratch like this it is easy to become too close to the issues and the brain becomes overloaded so you can't see the woods for the trees. I think this is also a classic example of why I always tell people to live in a house for a year before beginning to decorate, as hard as it is to be patient and wait, you do need to get the feel for a house and relate your lifestyle to it. I do like your idea of splitting the room into two areas, the room looks big enough to give you this option, and to me intimate spaces within a room create a more welcoming and homely feel. When you have a good idea of the furniture you would like, put what you have in the room and measure anything else before you buy it, use newspaper or cardboard boxes the size of the pieces and put them around the room to ensure you are going to get the desired result. It can be so easy to over or under estimate just how much space furniture will take up. Sorry the green lounge in the study didn't work out, but glad this has helped you see options. Just my personal opinion, one of my joeys had a lovely old grandfather clock in her lounge room and while it was a beautiful piece of furniture to look at, I just found it a little on the intrusive side - with its constant chiming it just didn't make the room feel relaxing, one was just so aware of the passing of time. Of course this can be advantageous when certain rellies visit. She ended up moving hers to her entrance foyer where it was a stand out feature and the lounge room became so much more relaxing. Ok. So here s the deal. I got myself a beautiful floor lamp only to realize that the lamp's legs are oak in color and the tv unit in the same setting is whitewashed acacia. I also have a light planter next to the lamp that's light wood tone too. Now here are my concerns :- 1) Is it advisable to have two different wood tones (yellow and white) in the same setting ? My sofa legs , though hidden are a dark mahogany color and the tv unit is an industrial one with dark grey metal legs. So sofa, unit and lamp all have different legs. 2) I have quite some space left next to the sofa after the lamp. The current round metal side table is not fitting and I d be replacing it. Am leaning towards a light wooden side table like one in the pics. Now if I get that, should its legs match the lamp( will be next to it ) or the the unit ? Also, should the side table match the hallway table ? I am using the sofa Ottoman as a coffee table and still looking for a hallway. 3) What else can I put in that space ? A plant ? Decorative vases ? Baskets ? 4) Does my sofa look silver in the led cool white light ? Should I change the light to warm or add some warm cushions ? Thanks in advance. Hi Vim. What are the dimensions of the room? Will this room function solely as a home theatre? If it's a dedicated space for watching movies, etc., I recommend painting the room and ceiling a dark matte colour(s) and install full length drapes in a dark fabric w/pelmet. This is to minimise light and reflection of light in the room and onto the screen, and drapes will also absorb sound, all factors to consider for an optimal theatre experience. I also notice the TV seems to be mounted rather high on the wall; is this comfortable for your neck when sitting and watching for extended periods? Is your speaker system already installed or will you use only the TV speaker? The style and type of seating is partly a matter of what other functions this room has/will have, the number of people you want to accomodate, and dimensions of the room. Personally, I prefer recliners for their individual comfort (ideally upholstered in dark fabric to dampen sound, rather than bounce it around the room). Having said that, leather is more forgiving and easier to clean and you can always have throw rugs on them for additional comfort and for sound-absorption. Recliners are easy to arrange, and can be grouped in pairs, or individually, with side tables between for drinks, snacks, remotes, etc. (non-reflective materials). Alternatively, two recliners and two armchairs w/ottomans, or a sofa and two armchairs. Your flooring is beautiful, and it will bounce sound around the room, so you may want to consider a much larger area rug. I hope I haven't overwhelmed you with suggestions...it's really a matter of how passionate you are about home theatre! Cheers.
