Kitchen Design help
Comments (11)Chris this is an unusual plan, but it has possibilities. I understand the limitations you mentioned, and while the splayed front wall softens the exterior from the street front, it really limits your internal options. I think a walk in may be out of the realms a little, and I understand a kitchen island is usually high on the list of things you want, however they may not always provide the best options for your layout, in this case I think having two sided access into the small, angular space limits making use of any other work space. I also think with north westerly aspect, why are our windows so small? I can envisage a large bench that perhaps goes out beyond your wall and becomes a table in your outdoor area. The bench can haves glazed panel window set onto the bench so it looks like its cutting through your build, and let's in copious amounts of sunlight and would be a great place to have breakfast or as a servery for entertaining. Perhaps linking the adjoining outdoors space can help give the illusion of a more generous kitchen, and highlight it's functionality. Ding this will mean the wall that runs along your verandah could utilize pantry space and tall storage including that large fridge. Clever use of materials could highlight your design details to make the statements you want such as a contemporary, cutting edge kitchen with all your storage needs and organization keeping it clutter free, or perhaps with a little individuali to emphasize your unique layout. I think either profiled or plain doors would work, Matt finishes for vertical with some textue added either in a visual pattern or real texture in a woodgrain or imprinted surface will add some interest and warmth, keeping your main palette neutral. I would lean towards raw materials and finishes such as concrete, timber and glass, and play on their strengths in form, colour and application. A concrete looking stone could really bridge the gap to the outdoors, maybe lay a large charcoal tile on the diagonal, so the kitchen flooring runs as if it were a standard square room. It would help conceal the angular space, and perhaps direct your eye to the new focus- the indoor outdoor connection. I will have a think and think of some more ways to make this a great kitchen. Good luck...See MoreAlready have a cabinet maker for kitchen but need help with colours?
Comments (19)Hi Michelle, There are many independent designers (both kitchen & interior) that would be happy to put together a colour schedule to suit the kitchen design that your cabinet maker has prepared, so a few phone calls in your local area should have this sorted for you. Alternatively, we offer a cost effective 3D rendering service at The Interior Difference (check out the examples on our Houzz profile) customised to your colour selections to assist you in ensuring that you have made the right selection before you commit to the colours. We find this is really helpful for client's who have a good idea of what they think they want but just need a visual to give them the confidence to proceed. Feel free to send us a message if you have any queries. Good luck with your project!! Rebecca - The Interior Difference...See MoreKitchen help needed urgently
Comments (17)Hi clau. Whilst we were in those very early stages of reno-ing, we got told all sorts of things couldn't be done - even very basic things. We were also told there was only one way to some parts of our multi-room makeover. However, after speaking with alternative tradies, we learned that previous advice had been totally wrong; and there's almost always more than one solution. Some will tell you "it can't be done", but what they really mean is "I don't want to do it". There's a huge difference. It all depends on the experience and can-do attitude of the tradie. Unfortunately, it's left to us to work out if something really is impossible, or a huge, costly mega drama, or if they've embellished the negatives because they simply can't be bothered going to any effort. Can I suggest that if someone tells you something can't be done, ask them to explain why. If they can't explain it in a way that us novices can understand, or it sounds vague, illogical or dodgy, it probably is! Then it's definitely time to talk to someone else. If we had taken the initial "nuh, can't do that" as gospel, we wouldn't have a great, practical outcome. It would have been limited by what a lazy tradie wanted to do - or one who didn't respect that their client has to live with the results. We would've been miffed if we had spent all that moolah and found out later on that we didn't have to settle for a less than ideal outcome after all. Research, research, research, and fire off questions, questions, questions, and I'm sure you'll end up with a brilliant outcome. You'll wonder why you ever got stressed about it! :-) (PS: I'm not suggesting your sparkie may be a lazy tradie, far from it. I just wanted to share the benefit of what we discovered, that's all)....See MoreHELP with kitchen remodel layout
Comments (34)The thing that has concerned me is that unless you enter through the front door and along the passageway past the bedrooms, you have to cross either of the two sunken rooms, ie; Media, living which I don't think is ideal, it would be magic if the Media was an internal garden courtyard. The following is just another idea that might help improve access into the kitchen family. the WIP between the Bar and kitchen would work for guests arriving into the house, in the evening via the living room and stopping in the Bar or during the day continuing to the kitchen family. The WIP could have a sink and DW which would service both kitchen and Bar. Another sink in the island and possibly another DW. The Bar could have a tall table with bar stools Whatever you do in the rear part of the house you will need new flooring to tie it all together Exciting times having a new home, once you have access you can work out how the spaces function and flow for you and the family...See MoreRinny
