What a transformation! WOW am blown away!

Modern Cottage please!

Although this red facebrick veneer single storey house with Colorbond roof, built in the 70s has a prominent location (corner of two streets), set deep inside front property line, it was barely visible from the front street and made no significant presence and contribution to the streetscape. Before: After: The design brief required rationalising the existing plan, extend to have with additional bedrooms, ensuites and living room with natural light & ventilation in abundance. The design intent was to blend the existing house with the new extension so the entire house is seamlessly integrated into one. The idea was to give a complete facelift to the entire house with a fresh new look-a contemporary style design with open plan living. Before: After: We achieved this by adding to the front of an existing house, which proved to be a challenging task, particularly being a corner block, visible from two streets-primary and secondary street. A concept design was developed that carefully married the new extension at the front with existing house at the rear. Old, period timber windows were replaced with new modern stained western red cedar windows to the entire house. The whole house was rendered and painted, thus blends the whole house together as one. This articulated front and side street facade gives an identity and street presence that enhances the streetscape and neighborhood. We added a North facing front façade is elevated high, thus visible from the front street, bringing the ‘Street Presence’. This elevated height provides additional high windows flooding the interior with natural light. We also added in lots of architectural detailing, with the use of Colorbond roof and wall cladding, combined with the use of fresh colors for rendered walls, western red cedar stained windows provide a very modern, fresh and contemporary look to this house. The result achieved is sensitive and thoughtful design, which emerged after careful site analysis and selection of right materials. Most importantly, the use of the right scale, materials, proportions and articulation of facades have manifested this project into delightful and rich architectural experience. The design was highly commended and appreciated by the viewers, it was published in ‘Contemporary Home Design’ prestigious architectural magazine and received ‘Design Award’ from Archicentre for Excellence in Design (Australian Institute of Architects-Advisory Service).

I like most of it , but definitely wouldn't have done 2 tone grey walls . The kitchen with the charcoal and white with the wooden floor looks great , and then you see the dreariness of the grey -- it just seems to kill the mood for me . Just to use the kitchen as an example , with the nice appliances which really do add that pop , why not go a surfmist or maybe lighter and bluer -- still a greyish tone , but a blue tinge . In fact , a 50's powder blue on the wall , similar to the appliances , would have looked better IMO . Each to their own , and the most of the rest of the design I like .
