Kitchen layout help needed
We've recently moved to land life after living on boats for 30 years, and haven't really any idea where to start with a new kitchen - "we don't even know what we don't know". I've attached photos of the existing kitchen and the measurements, showing where items are now. The fridge and microwave are new. I'll need a new cooktop (gas 60cm) & oven (60cm, probably wall oven). We don't particularly want a dishwasher but think we should put a cupboard in to accommodate one later. I want a good sized island, and like the idea of putting a drinks fridge in the end of the island (facing the wall the fridge is on). I quite like where the fridge is now, but I'm open to ideas. I'd like a small pantry, but am open to the idea that my island could be pretty big and I should end up with heaps of space to keep my pantry items close to where I'll use them. I wonder if there's enough space to put cooktop and sink (1.5 or double) in the same bench under the window? One kitchen designer suggested putting the oven & microwave on the far wall, on the other side of the window from the fridge, along with a pantry, with some cupboards under the windowsill (50cm high). I'm not sure I want my kitchen that large, but could be talked into it. The wall separating the kitchen and mudroom could be extended into the hallway if necessary. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Comments (6)Hello again- I have run up a quick design for you. Not perfect as to dimensions and placement of the troublesome beam however, I've made the island longer so that the kitchen looks more like a kitchen and placed TV behind the middlle hinged doors so that the TV is hung on the wall not sitting on the counter and when not being viewed, it can be hidden behind the doors. Comments (4)How attached are you in having a separate Living room? One option is: remove the wall between the study and Living room, remove the doors between the family and the living room, add french doors between the family and study. Tv and media then move into the study with the option of french doors open or closed to allow these rooms to become one or separate rooms. (in essence a bit like a keeping room) The living room and study then function as one room. I love interior french doors because it provides options in how the space flows depending upon the number of people in the house, the amount of noise I want to block, or the mess I want to hide without blocking light. I would make the entrance into the current bedroom 1 and turn current entrance/lounge into main bedroom with sunroom where current entrance is...nice place to relax with doors open. Then I would knock the wall down between the kitchen and current bedroom 1 to make one large room from front to back and put the kitchen along the wall against current bedroom 4 with long bench with dining area one end and open plan lounge at other end. I would wall off bedroom 4 and only be able to enter it from lounge. another door in lounge to enter remains of bedroom 4 which I would convert to laundry and then entry to bathroom. Block current doors from kitchen into bedroom 1 and bedroom 4/bathroom. Either block door between bedrooms 3 or take wall down to make one big room. Scuttle outdoor bathroom/toilet to make one long outdoor area that opens up from kitchen dining area. Comments (11)Thanks everyone - your comments and diagrams have given me plenty of ideas I hadn't considered. Perhaps shifting the wall is a little drastic! I'm now thinking of going a long U shape like this. I'll add a few upper cabinets on the left side too for the most frequently used stuff from the pantry (as the pantry is still a distance from the stove/oven). The fridge as you can see is now right amongst the action. We also have a chest freezer hiding out in the laundry which I can move into the old fridge space...alternatively I might convert it to a computer workstation as suggested. I'm leaning towards a peninsula rather than an island, just because I feel like it will give me a slightly more efficient/seamless work space, and we don't expect seating at at the island/peninsula will get used much given how close the dining table is. 4 years agoI dislike corner bench cupboards and bench tops, this layout keeps it simple leaving the fridge built in where it is.a bench seat from that under the window and then a pantry
A 3m x 900 island with 900 gas cooktop, you would need to add a down draught extractor or one that is suspended from the ceiling.

4 years agoMost of the mess occurs at the sink, so it's very important to get the newer deep square sinks they sallow a heap of mess.
Without all measurements perhaps something like this might appeal to you, hoping it won't cut put any light into the room.
Because this is your living dining the kitchen needs to be kept simple and not look like your average kitchen
