This rustic modern home was purchased by an art collector that needed plenty of white wall space to hang his collection. A complete rebuild of a 1950s modern home, this project combines spatial openness, a consistent use of materials, and reconfiguration of the ground plane to bring light deep into this home and frame views of the park beyond. Daylight is introduced to the home through two new shafts of windows and skylights above the living areas. A sculptural steel and limestone stair serves as a spatially dynamic centerpiece for the home, connecting the new second floor and addition of a lower level. The design of this home was driven by the owners’ desire for a three-bedroom waterfront home that showcased the spectacular views and park-like setting. As nature lovers, they wanted their home to be organic, minimize any environmental impact on the sensitive site and embrace nature. This unique home is sited on a high ridge with a 45° slope to the water on the right and a deep ravine on the left. The five-acre site is completely wooded and tree preservation was a major emphasis. Very few trees were removed and special care was taken to protect the trees and environment throughout the project. To further minimize disturbance, grades were not changed and the home was designed to take full advantage of the site’s natural topography. Oak from the home site was re-purposed for the mantle, powder room counter and select furniture. The visually powerful twin pavilions were born from the need for level ground and parking on an otherwise challenging site. Fill dirt excavated from the main home provided the foundation. All structures are anchored with a natural stone base and exterior materials include timber framing, fir ceilings, shingle siding, a partial metal roof and corten steel walls. Stone, wood, metal and glass transition the exterior to the interior and large wood windows flood the home with light and showcase the setting. Interior finishes include reclaimed heart pine floors, Douglas fir trim, dry-stacked stone, rustic cherry cabinets and soapstone counters. Exterior spaces include a timber-framed porch, stone patio with fire pit and commanding views of the Occoquan reservoir. A second porch overlooks the ravine and a breezeway connects the garage to the home. Numerous energy-saving features have been incorporated, including LED lighting, on-demand gas water heating and special insulation. Smart technology helps manage and control the entire house. This beautiful, solid wood, in-frame Shaker kitchen was part of a complete house renovation. The client wanted a light, airy and practical kitchen. It includes large island, American-style fridge/freezer framed by built-in larder units providing plenty of food storage and a bi-fold butler unit neatly houses all the tea and coffee making equipment. An electric/induction hob range cooker is complemented by a Quooker boiling water tap, providing plenty of instant boiling water. The units were were supplied by The White Kitchen Company and hand-painted in Farrow and Ball Railings on the island and Drop​ Cloth for the remainder. The light quartz worktop is Silestone 'Lagoon'.

A partial remodel of a Marin ranch home, this residence was designed to highlight the incredible views outside its walls. The husband, an avid chef, requested the kitchen be a joyful space that supported his love of cooking. High ceilings, an open floor plan, and new hardware create a warm, comfortable atmosphere. With the concept that “less is more,” we focused on the orientation of each room and the introduction of clean-lined furnishings to highlight the view rather than the decor, while statement lighting, pillows, and textures added a punch to each space.
