What started as a kitchen and two-bathroom remodel evolved into a full home renovation plus conversion of the downstairs unfinished basement into a permitted first story addition, complete with family room, guest suite, mudroom, and a new front entrance. We married the midcentury modern architecture with vintage, eclectic details and thoughtful materials.

By removing the existing his and her closets from the master bathroom and annexing space from the laundry room, we were able to design in separate tub and showers to fit into the space. White tile with a distinct midcentury pattern on it clads (2) full walls and lightens up the space. The sleek undermount tub with white quartz top is beautiful in its simplicity and is balanced out by the walnut skirt panels that are easily removed by touch latches. Bathroom renovation included using a closet in the hall to make the room into a bigger space. Since there is a tub in the hall bath, clients opted for a large shower instead.

A Jack and Jill bathroom is a shared full bathroom with two or more entrances. Jack and Jill bathrooms conserve space while providing direct en-suite bathroom access from one or more bedrooms. You’ll often find Jack and Jill bathrooms sandwiched between two secondary bedrooms, with access from each bedroom. This is a renovation of the primary bathroom. The existing bathroom was cramped, so some awkward built-ins were removed, and the space simplified. Storage is added above the toilet and window.

A whole house renovation and second story addition brought this unique 1950s home into a mid-century modern vernacular. Light-filled interior spaces mix with new filtered views, and the new master bedroom is surprising in its “tree house” feel. This home was featured on the 2018 AIA East Bay Home Tours.
