Modern Family Room, San Luis Obispo

Retractable French doors open wide to allow interweaving of outdoor and indoor space characterizing a uniquely Californian way of living. There is a breezy informality that takes you from the highly polished concrete floors inside to the slightly more textured concrete of the patio. Blending the indoor and outdoor living room with the same concrete floor surface extends the perceptual size of the room. The outdoor living room [patio] is given function by the rock gabion walls lining its edge. Built by the owners, the rocks from the site excavation work were carefully stacked into wire cages and the top covered with ipe wood to allow a long buffet area or just a cool place for kids to play. At the end of the wall, the rock gabbions form the outdoor shower.
