Glass bricks were invented in France early last century, soon after the glass-manufacturing machine by Loeme in 1903. The first ever glass blocks were 4 to 6.5 cm in thickness but these days they can be much thicker and make appearances in bathrooms and building exteriors all of the world.
If you're thinking of using them, they also have good sound proofing and thermal qualities. But do you like the look of them?

Mirrored rangehood - are you a fan?
Comments (61)We have a glass rangehood similar to Futuro Futuro's Acqualina Glass product and I love it. The top and bottom of the glass gets given a clean about once a week with citrus multi-purpose cleaning spray and then wiped down with a moistened glass cleaning cloth for a pristine finish. Takes around 5 minutes in total. Cleaning the brushed stainless part is more difficult. As mentioned previously, its hard to remove all the marks. Will definately try the WD40. Me, personally, I don't like the mirrored finish. Given the window is acting as the "splashback" I would have gone for something invisible like what Sheryl Horton showed....See MoreBesser block ideas
Comments (17)These are photos of the stairwell in glacier grey. I tried to take photos going up the stairwell. This is in a house that we just sold, so things are moved and missing. As you can see the colour changes in the different light. I tried to show you how I started at the ground floor and followed the same colour up to the 3 rd floor. The other colour is Dulux Whisper white. This is not Besser Block but honestly you can paint Besser block in whatever colour you think will suit the walls. As I said I used whisper white and a charcoal, feature wall. different house. Looking at your photos I would probably suggest the Glacier grey with the whisper white and white railings. Comments (85)It must depend what you cook. I don't do fried, spitty type dishes and the grout around the largish tiles in my now 10 year old kitchen is as good as new. I rubbed car wax into the freshly laid grout lines, same as I did in the bathroom. It also depends on how much light bounces around your kitchen, glass being so reflective shows up smears with light on it. Just above the kettle in the first photo is a good example. Comments (47)Vergola pergola would be perfect. Thinking about using the boundary, a rough guide from a Melbourne architect is 25% of the length of the boundary plus 10M , don't quote me! So the following pushes out at the front which allows for a narrow Japanese style stone garden with sliding glass doors opening up to it. this will also help to expand the size of the kitchen. The boundary fence brick or other with something like Laser cut steel panels for privacy on top Entrance from the garage can be via the laundry or into the passageway with easy access to the bathroom Just a couple more thoughts for you to ponder...See More

9 years agoI'm not a neutral vote here - having been in the glass block business myself since 1985. It seems like they are much maligned these days but we are seeing growth with projects like glass block showers, windows and walls. There have been advances in products (like colored and frosted blocks, thinner glass blocks and etched blocks many people are not aware of. These advances can and do create a new look. With that being said - glass blocks do provide a look that some people love ...and others do not.
I will include some pictures below of some recent jobs to show some of the capabilities of this product. Let me know if you like them or not. We are working to show you can have more unique designs with the product.
