Big couch, narrow room, 3 entries

Hi am after some advice as to how I can configure/ decorate my loungeroom differently. I cannot change the lounge - it is a modular king furniture jasper.. I have a chaise, a single chair and a 2 seater piece. The sides and backs are able to be moved and located in different side of chair. I have a 5 yr old and 7 yr old so it also needs to be practical as this is our only TV living space - I have struggled with this for 8 years and recently had single piece in corner but with winter needed to move to accommodate heater. Have bought new pendant light to hang and existing will be going over dining table. As you can see I also am unsure what to do with the only blank wall in room. So appreciative of any help!

Hi Suttons06! I have exactly the same Jasper lounge, it's so comfy isn't it?
As far as redecorating your lovely room is concerned, what is your number one priority with this space? Also, you've done a great job bringing in splashes of color in your artwork and cushions, so what is it about that color palette that you'd like to change? I'm asking to hone in on your actual dilemma with this space so I can make sure I give you the right solution. Given the neutral pendant light you've purchased, did you want to change the colors to more neutral ones? Ready and willing to help :)

Biggest dilemma is really the configuration to make it look more like a living /loungeroom space rather than a long line of seating along one wall! I love my couch and am happy with the colours too so thanks for the positive comment. The light was just to tie the wood in the lounge etc together a little more and be more of a feature than the existing pendant which is functional but not really doing much for the space. There is two glass panels and a sliding door but it isn't really used except for moving stuff in and for a breeze, but didn't know if it would look funny with a couch in front of it... Haven't had a coffee table when kids younger but contemplating one now they older...

Congratulations on your new home. I think you have been very sensible to live in it for a year before starting your decorating, it has given you time to consider the lighting and aspect of each room in all seasons as well as time to evaluate how you want to live in your home and exactly what you need. The lounge does look very big and bulky and will definitely dominate the room, so I would keep to the lighter colour. Don't worry about the kids and dirt - as Kookykaren said, leather cleans easily - sharp objects and textas are your bigger worry regardless of what colour you choose. Laying newspaper on the floor to the size of the lounge is another way of checking how it will look as it gives you a better indication of bulk than tape. I would keep your ottoman simple (one with storage is an excellent idea with the children), just a tone on tone fabric or a pattern using the colours in the rug on the floor of the photo of the lounge. I don't think you have room for too large an ottoman but I would have a square one made the same height as the lounge so when just you and DH are watching TV you can push it against the other end of the lounge and both have a chaise. You can then bring some colour with art work or some patterned cushions on the lounges.

Hi Martea, I agree with Dohraime, an open bookcase would help create an entrance way and provide some storage that appears to be much needed from the floor plans. You asked about dimensions, I would personally make sure that the minimum clear space between the staircase and end of the book shelf is a minimum of 1200mm, but at the absolute minimum, 1000mm (1 metre) clear space is needed; thus it should be between 1200mm and 1500mm in length and the height should preferably match the head of your windows so approximately 2100mm. Depending upon the dimensions of your existing 3-seater sofa, I agree that you could back this onto the open bookcase. However, to ensure the best look, the sofa should end when the bookshelf does. As you can see from the diagram I have included, you could fit 2 arm-chairs and a coffee table in, however care will need to be taken to enure you have enough space to walk comfortably around the pieces of furniture. Try to search for a narrow coffee table. Given that you have replaced the curtains with shutters, you could place the television and console in front. This is not ideal in regards to lighting, but the space is constrained. I would also include a large rug (as depicted) for the living space so as to clearly define it. It could be approximately 3 x 1.8 m. This rug could be something bright and colourful given the muted colour scheme you have so far used. A bold pattern would also work. In regards to the dining area, it is possible to also fit a buffet in the space, and would again provide more storage. Something I noticed, and I am not sure it is within your budget, but the dividing wall around the staircase at the entrance is very dark and interrupts the clean lines you are going for. I would suggest if possible to remove it and replace with a glass balustrade. This would open up the space more and help to bring more light into this space. I hope this has been of help. Hi Juliahocking - thanks for the ideas! Sorry I saw your comments on the weekend and then forgot to come back and update after I had moved the furniture around. I like the idea of moving the sofa and creating two separate spaces within the room. The problem is that the section of the room with the blank wall doesn't have a tv point so would need to get that installed. I moved one of the couches there to face the wall and it felt a little bit cramped, and the other section of the room seemed to have a lot of space to fill without the second couch. Is this what you meant? I found the photos from the real estate listing to show the previous owners set up, they might give a better indication of the space? We moved the TV to the corner because we didn't like it blocking the window, but i don't think the corner is ideal either. Do you think it would work to have a couple of chairs in the "dining" section of the room, or would that be strange to be facing to the back of the couch? Would love any ideas to make the windows prettier. I love the outlook but the brown screens and frames are not very attractive! Timandra Design and Landscaping - thanks! Will start my search for some large pieces of art and colourful cushions. Is it that rug you don't like, or just the idea of a rug in general in this room? I wasn't sure about a rug on top of carpet but thought it could be a good way to break up the space and add some colour. I am planning to return that rug on the weekend and continue my search! I agree I love the green outlook and it is really nice to lie on the couch and look out (while wondering how to set up the room!) :)

You could go wider but it depends on what type of dining furniture would want to use and how many you will be catering for. Bench seating tucks underneath and when it is being used you aren't so worried about the other space. You could always turn it around the other way [ perpendicular to the house] so the width is less of an issue as 10 metres is a decent length deck. I think even an extra 30cm would make a difference and not doing it may cost more in regret than the materials. You could go wider in the dining area only but it is a bit hard to judge without seeing the space. Find some furniture you like online and map out a plan for yourself - use newspaper for life size modelling. Good luck

Ok thanks for the great additional info! I know the Jasper is hard to work with in a small space but what a beautiful, big comfy couch it is! Perfect for everyone to kick back on. I'm not sure what your budget is suttons06 but these would be my suggestions to create a space that functions a little better and frees up floor space for you.

Your room needs a focal point and we can give it one! The large wall with the one artwork on it is our saviour! So, what you need to do is shift the Jasper onto the window wall. This will free of valuable floor space by removing the TV unit and also open up the doorways by having the chaise up against the wall (not hard up against it but aesthetically up against it). Of course you'd leave enough room to operate the blinds. This will stop glare on the TV and give you a nice large wall to hang the TV (on a bracket to rotate it in the direction of the viewers). The chaise section will block the other doorway but not as much because of the larger wall it would be up against.

This setup will allow the TV wall to be the focal point of the room, anchoring the space with a purpose and focus which the room is lacking now. Either side of the TV, I would place artwork and family photos, framed in dark wood (same color as your new pendant, let's call it walnut for argument's sake) with white mats on floating shelves.

You can also decorate with vases, books and sentimental items. The white will add a crisp, fresh neutral to an otherwise warm palette, balancing it out. I've attached some photos of similar layouts for you. What do you think?

Then I would invest in a modern

coffee table in the same walnut. A place for your coffee cup, some magazines, kids books and anything else you like to have around you when relaxing.

The last thing I would add to complete and modernise the space would be artwork on the other blank walls (or photos) and new Holland sheer blinds (if privacy not an issue) or blockout blinds if it is.

I hope that gives you some ideas to work with. Don't be afraid suttons06, just do it! If you don't do it, you'll never know. And make sure you have fun along the way.
