Firstly, get the high pressure hose out and some outdoor cleaner to get rid of any moss build up on the paving and any of the walls and get a hose caddy/cart that when entertaining can be moved out of the way. These things will instantly make it feel better and tidier. use the vertical spaces available with hanging baskets with colour from the roof beams (use light weight baskets and potting medium) and window troughs that you can use with hooks off the fence (again, use light weight potting medium and troughs so as not to interfere with the structural integrity of the fence and beams). Use screen panels or lattice to hide any tanks/plumbing that exists and use well behaved climbers to continue to cover it. Look for some old outdoor timber settings to recycle by painting it up in either white or bright colour(s) (remember you can use outdoor cushions to introduce colour too) and then add hurricane candle holders - this looks inviting and casual. Look at your local hardware for either solar or electrical outdoor bollard lighting to make the space inviting of an evening (don't forget fairy/icicle lights for parties and/or Xmas) - look around for specials as you can save a bunch if your local Bunnings/Masters/Mitre 10 has a sale. Shade sails are an option if the area gets unpleasantly hot can also be used under the transparent roofing as is inserting some hooks into the beams and jerry-rigging a canvas awning that can be put up and taken down in minutes (just remember that you'll need eyelets in the canvas for the hooks to go through) are easy and cheap. The same idea can be done with net/muslin and LED fairy lights for evening parties. Have a colourful gorilla tub to do double duty around the house - gardening, laundry and as a good sized esky. If budget permits and there isn't already one - get an outdoor powerpoint - it's so handy for lights, the high pressure hose etc....See MoreUpdate very tired front of house and streetscape
Comments (41)Hi there, I personally don't like the look of that rock wall with your home. It does nothing for it. I would get rid of it, you may even be able to sell the rock for a bit of cash. I would besser block a retaining wall in its place with posts and render this, then use your timber horizontally slated between the posts. Select a paint colour that works nice with your timber colour and carry the colour through to your house. This will also work in with your side timber fence. Also remove all the plants in the front, just because they are lovely doesn't mean they are in the right place or serve a purpose, you may be able to transplant them somewhere else in the yard. Plants: mop tops are a great feature tree and give lots of shade in summer. A hedge along the inside of the fence would look great, Lilly pilly's are good and Japanese box is tough as boots and requires little water once up a bit. Westringia, birds of paradise, hibiscus, viburnum, Murraya all take heat, depends on what look your after. My average temps in summer are 47 degrees and winter -3 & these plants survive. Yes I also agree with a path from the front to the door. Front door to house could have some timber posts added with an awning/patio to make it stand out. The timber would carry through from the front fence. Painting the brick can also give it a lift if you don't want to go modern with render. You could also paint the concrete driveway, there are some snazzy options available for this, plain or stencil. Best of luck! I'm sure it will come up a treat....See MoreTired bronze aluminium windows
Comments (5)I remember that colour. Good news, they can be painted. Its fiddly and time consuming, but if you are handy, it can be easy. Simpy put, remove any curtains, hooks etc Cover the floor area around where you will be to protect from over spray Carefully mask all the areas not to be painted Clean, light sand with steel wool, green scourer etc Prime using etch primer (light coats) Apply spay top coats in sheen and colour. Clean up and remove all tape Clean any over spray off glass and other areas. Jump online and look at a bunch of videos like https://www.bunnings.com.au/diy-advice/paint/how-to-paint/how-to-paint-window-frames If you are not to keen to try it, then there are painters out there that specialize in this type of work. Hope this helps. James....See MoreUpdating a tired 90s brick house
Comments (13)Hi Lisa - well, we started!! Haha. We ended up painting all the ballustrades white, the poles a shade of beige/grey and then Domino on some feature walls/sections. However we had to pause as we went back at work during Covid (my husband and I run two business plus have two kids so we just ran out of any time to continue). And after some time, we've decided to change it all and go Monument 😆 We're going to get the roof painted in Monument and then keep the rest dark too - i'll be replanting the front near the stairs to the door so we're hoping the new greenery pops out. More work, but after seeing how it's turned out, we agree we think it will all look really nice it it goes the one colour, maybe a pop colour front door to balance it out :)...See Morejck910
