We used spotted gum for our decking and love it! We got it for $4.25 linear metre from Masters (any lengths that were inferior they were happy to replace). Our deck was built next to our near-white pavers so merbau was out of the question due to its leaching (plus we also were wanting an eco-friendly local hardwood if possible).

Even though I love the look of a container and they have a lot going for them, the dollar's just didn't add up for them to be a cost effective solution when compared to standard building practice's. They are just a bit to narrow which is where the main issue stemmed from. Joining two together work's but again paying a metal shop to do it bumped up the cost's with structural steelwork, engineering detailing/shop drawing's, etc. I used to be a boilermaker welder many year's ago so know what was needed....... Shame they didn't work out cost wise as I can see the attraction. Nevertheless, I would investigate both option's of using a container as the starting point, then compare it to if you used standard building processes of timber frame and cladding with the same dimension's......

Hi May I ask why you want to use rammed earth? There are other more energy efficient materials around particularly when you want to build two storey. The answer to your question as to who to use will be heavily influenced by what materials you choose. Building in alternative materials usually requires changes in methods regarding eg footing/concrete details, reinforcement (engineering) prelays and finishes. Talking with builders / architects experienced in the method eg rammed earth early will both help you avoid mistakes / late changes to accommodate materials and different requirements.... I would start by talking with builders that have built in the method you like. You will soon find out if it is what you want. A simple web search will locate rammed earth builders who are experienced in double storey homes. I know of one in QLD. Cheers
