how about a glass splash back? I love the floor tiles

take the tape off, glue tile on (,you can use 600mm by 600 mm tile , cut the hole for tape) .then put tape back . the tile cove the bend from sink .

if the connection to the tape not long enough , you can get the extention part to add on . can get from Bunning.

Re the asbestos thing (and don't take this as pro advice...cos I aint) but if it looks like, quacks like it then it MIGHT be it. I thought I had asbestos walls (cos everyone said "it might be asbestos"...similar to some kid who may have been Jake Gyllenall saying to Arnie "it might be a toomore"). My walls were not asbestos. However I did find out that you can remove a certain square meterage of asbestos (depending on state boundaries) without have expert (very expensive) assistance (check the state rules). If it "might be" then be careful. As you are tiling over (therefor not cutting, grinding, messing about with?) then stay cool and tile to your tile glue's content!

Apparent age of building, it's a wet area, and the tap surround is damaged already so it looks like it needs work before it can be tiled over and I'd want to know anyway.

You can get a small piece of asbestos sheet tested (50 cent piece) for about $70. I can't remember the name, but they do all kinds of testing, are based in Footscray (vic) and you generally post samples. Get a decent face mask and remove a small bit from a hidden location - with a can of spray paint at the ready to seal the fibres.

As well as a face mask; wear cheap disposable painters overalls, thick plastic gloves and spray the area down with water first as well. Then wrap all clothing items up in plastic and throw away and hop in the shower. Don't take half measures with asbestos!

There does seem to be some dodgy looking pipework behind that left tap as well - I'd get in a plumber as well to fix that and extend if needed to accommodate the new splash-back, which you can then do yourself - keeping in mind it all needs to be correctly sealed and waterproof.
