How do I create an inviting entry room?
Comments (15)Hi Martea, I agree with Dohraime, an open bookcase would help create an entrance way and provide some storage that appears to be much needed from the floor plans. You asked about dimensions, I would personally make sure that the minimum clear space between the staircase and end of the book shelf is a minimum of 1200mm, but at the absolute minimum, 1000mm (1 metre) clear space is needed; thus it should be between 1200mm and 1500mm in length and the height should preferably match the head of your windows so approximately 2100mm. Depending upon the dimensions of your existing 3-seater sofa, I agree that you could back this onto the open bookcase. However, to ensure the best look, the sofa should end when the bookshelf does. As you can see from the diagram I have included, you could fit 2 arm-chairs and a coffee table in, however care will need to be taken to enure you have enough space to walk comfortably around the pieces of furniture. Try to search for a narrow coffee table. Given that you have replaced the curtains with shutters, you could place the television and console in front. This is not ideal in regards to lighting, but the space is constrained. I would also include a large rug (as depicted) for the living space so as to clearly define it. It could be approximately 3 x 1.8 m. This rug could be something bright and colourful given the muted colour scheme you have so far used. A bold pattern would also work. In regards to the dining area, it is possible to also fit a buffet in the space, and would again provide more storage. Something I noticed, and I am not sure it is within your budget, but the dividing wall around the staircase at the entrance is very dark and interrupts the clean lines you are going for. I would suggest if possible to remove it and replace with a glass balustrade. This would open up the space more and help to bring more light into this space. I hope this has been of help. Comments (8)Beautiful. Love your white "Hamptons " style. Interesting your choice of both handles & knobs in the first after pic. The floor is stunning complimenting the cabinetry. I really like the island, looks great as a large work/dining space with out the obstruction of the sink or hot plates. Very fresh timeless. The room dividing cabinetry with above glass display very practical. Well done ✅...See MoreAdvice needed on my brown living room wall
Comments (21)I'm surprised to admit I really like the brown. I usually don't like earthy neutrals of any shading but this one is ok, it certainly provided balance for the dark furniture the previous owners had. I love the idea of the side table at 90 degrees to the start of that wall to create a reading nook/dining space and redirect traffic. You could get something reasonable tall facing toward the glass doors to be storage/extension of the kitchen so there is a sense of connection. You could then put paint, wallpaper the back of that cupboard and put up the mirror and a little table for keys. Or even have matching bookshelves back to back and use the one facing the front door as a 'wet' room/shoe storage. Ikea sells so many great units that you can tailor the combination of size and shapes open and closed to get just the right look on each side.If you do this you have to screw the two units to each other so that stand straight and appear as one. If you did use the nook as dinning space you could have all the serving/special stuff in that cupboard so you dont have to go far for setting the table and leave the kitchen cupboards for daily use stuff. When I first moved into my big home from a super tiny apartment I just laid out what I had (plastic dinning set and all) as best I could and moved them around every few weeks till I got the combination of how to use the room right. Then I went and bought more/new furniture over the next 6 months....See MoreCozy One-bedroom Apartment Transformation with Smart Storage Solutions
Comments (7)Give me the before any day ! Clean , uncluttered , highlights the wooden floors and door frames , has some colourful art and stools and cushions . I did wonder why you'd put a 1970's microwave on a table , but someone told me that was what TV's were like 100 odd years ago hahaha . More space ? A Bunnings gloss white cabinet on a budget would fit in , or a dark actual wooden one if your budget stretches into the $100's . Shelves above the couch for anyone over 1.8 metres to knock their head on ? 1960's green paint ? A 'nothing' couch ? A weird collection of pictures on a shelf ? A table that can't work out it its wooden or industrial ? That's okay in itself , BUT combined with a slightly strange wooden light / storage thing IN A DIFFERENT WOOD , and the floor different again , well . . . . . . . My quick 'vision' based on the before pictures -- leave as is , but add -- a large red rug ( actually 2 -- one in lounge , one in bedroom ) ; a larger abstract work of art ; a flat screen tv mounted on the wall ; possibly red subway tiles in the kitchen ( my current favourite wall tiles are a mix of 25mm tall charcoal , mid grey , aluminium and mid red tiles ) ; and new lights , but you'd actually live with the existing ones if you had to ....See Moretimsaway
