Building a house, but would love opinions on colours to choose, for walls, kitchens, carpets, floorboards, tiles, bathrooms... We have children and I do not want to be forever cleaning marks off this and that :)
A very difficult to answer in general terms as there are so many variables including personal likes and dislikes, the function of each room, natural lighting, aspect of the home. The type of finish is probably more important to consider at this point than colour. For eg are you having tiles, carpets or floor boards. Tiles are generally the hardest wearing however likely to date quicker. Floor boards are timeless but can be scratched however this tends to act character to the floor. Suggest you select the flooring first. Go for mid tones in carpet and if no one in the family has allergies than a woollen one as you can get this in variegated colours which disguises marks and stains. If using floor boards steer away from very dark colours as although they look absolutely stunning they will show every spec of dust, animal hair etc. same applies to t dark tiles.
Once you have your flooring selected than select bench tops. This colour will be influenced by the type of cooking you do. A lot of my clients of Indian descent will select darker colours due to spices which are an integral part of their cooking. Again it is the finish rather than the colour which will make it easy cleaning. After this cupboard doors etc. Select wall colour last.
Sorry for not recommending specific colours. Suggest if you are really struggling engage a specialist and they will be able to provide you with a schedule of colours which suit your family and lifestyle
My suggestion is to avoid white or light tiles in the bathroom. I had them in a rental with small children once and they only looked clean for short periods after they were mopped. My bathrooms now have a taupe tile in a stony texture and this is perfect for heavy use.
I chose Laminex Alaskan for my kitchen drawers and doors... it has a texture. I love it - it NEVER shows fingerprints, always looks clean and is easy to clean.
