Comments (10)Thank you so much everyone for all the fantastic ideas. I'm glad I posted here. Your pictures all look amazing too. I never considered a mirrored cabinet at first - I didn't think they looked as sophisticated! But the drawers just don't provide enough storage and I think I will go with that - it will satisfy my desire for a large mirror too! I love the "round the corner" idea for getting a good view of my hair dos! Thanks again everyone :-)...See MoreFlat mirror versus mirror cabinet?
Comments (48)Thanks Margot. I think I've more or less got it sorted. The only challenge remaining, I think, is finding a way to give it a visual lift. It currently has floor to ceiling tiles in a standard size, square, and a very uninteresting colour with no texture - but in very good order. Very dull! I hate grout in showers so I'm thinking maybe some Mr Wetwall panelling or something similar over the tiles in the shower and on the new wall formed by moving the linen cpd, plus on a part wall along the long side of the shower to replace the glass screens that I insist must go (I'm a lazy cleaner and I hate cleaning glass!) Hopefully that would be enough to relieve the dullness of the existing tiles. Then some feature shelving over the new bath tub perhaps. Not yet decided whether to install a freestanding back-to-wall bath or a drop-in, but the latter might provide scope for some more feature tiling or panelling around it. I want to open the room directly to the outdoors but the current window opening is only 1200mm wide and the wall is 8 inches of solid concrete - not easy to cut to enlarge the opening - so I'm looking at either a hinged door with window inset into it or a standard size glass swing door with a narrow window beside for ventilation. My other challenge is doors for the relocated linen cpd, as the existing mirror doors have got to go! I loathe them. As the cpd will be visible from the living area, it needs stylish doors....See MoreBowl sizes to suit vanity space
Comments (5)Wow, you must have a big bathroom to fit all of that luxe stuff in! Most 1950s houses have very compact bathrooms with tiny showers, minimal vanity and small baths. A double vanity, a walk-in-shower and a free-standing bath all take up a lot more room than what is normally allowed for in a 1950's bathroom so I hope you have it carefully planned. These items often look luxe as they are in bigger bathrooms and the space around them actually contributes to the luxe look. Trying to squeeze these items into a small room doesn't look luxe, it just looks try-hard. Make sure you allow enough room behind your freestanding bath to swing a mop for cleaning, and that your towel rails are more than 1800mm from your shower rose, unless your new buyer likes soggy towels! 1500mm is adequate for a double vanity, but it depends on the size of each bowl. A pair of smaller bowls will give the illusion of more benchspace. An 1800mm vanity has a better proportion if you have the space. The smallest I have seen is a 1030mm wide one from Ikea, with little benchspace, but I reckon it would feel too crowded with two average sized people using at the same time, so hardly worth while. I know some of my clients prefer to have a single vanity with more benchspace. https://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/S69185850/ Best of luck with your flip, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls...See MoreMichelle
