Awkward living room - need help!
Comments (13)Thanks for the suggestions. I can't hang or mount the tv as I'm renting. The tv won't fit in those wall gaps either :( Ideally I'd like to put the tv on the main wall and put the sofa opposite but I think the sofa would be too close to the tv and there would be only a very narrow walkway behind to access the bedroom and bathroom. It's tough! I think having the tv in front of the window may be my best option. Not much direct light gets in due to the fence and trees outside the courtyard. There are also blinds which block out the light. Here are some ideas I'm going off at the moment: https://www.houzz.co.uk/photos/south-florida-family-estate-modern-family-and-games-room-miami-phvw-vp~2830052 https://www.houzz.com.au/photos/urban-family-getaway-contemporary-family-room-dc-metro-phvw-vp~3206796...See MoreHelp - Renovation ideas for an existing living room
Comments (15)The free-standing wood-burning stove is an option for repurposing the existing fireplace. Just be sure to have chimney swept prior to any flue installation. An installer will likely request this. It is for fire safety and it makes their job easier. Other option would be to have gas plumbed to the location and a gas insert fireplace. It really is a matter of preference. Obviously, burning wood is a bit messier and does, over time, leave a smoke residue on walls which just means more maintenance involved. As you mentioned a preference for lighter timber flooring, you could take a look at the various oaks available....See MoreLiving room fireplace advice needed
Comments (28)Hi Katle, I would keep the fireplace as it is, exposed brick, if ties in with the rest of the room styling and the overall style you like and are after. I would than work with the idea f keeping it as a center piece, but utilising the firebox as a niche for a plant or sculpture. In addition, I would have a narrow piece of joinery custom design to work with the proportions of the fireplace, so on its entirety is like a new piece of furniture. The fireplace is still there but has a new function. Or could simple add a narrow shelf and painting over. Monia...See Moreliving room help needed
Comments (17)You have a period home with wonderful warmth and character. Focus on lighting design, such as uplights and wall sconces to make the most of the drama of your soaring cathedral ceiling. They don't build them like this anymore, so don't try and disguise what makes your home special under a layer of plasterboard that you will see in any project builder's display village - they only use plasterboard as it is the cheapest way to cover the timber frame! It would be a great pity to make it look bland - celebrate the drama and character that you have, Best of luck Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls and Dr Retro Virtual Visits...See MoreBev
