The mirror is the wrong size for the mantle. There was a Houzz article some time back on sizing mirrors above fireplaces. First, you need to decide whether you want a mirror, a large picture, or a collection of objects on the mantle. For a mirror, it would need to be much larger. The upright edges of the mirror's frame should be the same width as the corbles under the mantle. The bottom of the mirror should be at least 150mm above the mantle and the top edge of the mirror approx 200mm below the cornice. Working with what you have got, try turning your existing mirror so the long edge is across the chimney wall and at least 150mm above the mantle. Petapea's idea of a round mirror is great and will alleviate lining mirror edges up with the mantle or fireplace. Otherwise, try styling the mantle and wall with assymetry. The sofa is out of whack with the other chairs/furniture given there does not appear to be a TV in the room. It looks too big for the space and is pushed up against the wall to fit it in. A large 3 seater sofa with feet similar to the chairs would be better. The sofa would then be visually smaller, there would be flow around it, and it would make the space look bigger as you will see more floor. Do you need a rug? Get rid of the rug or get one that fits under the legs of your "new sofa" and the other two chairs. A glass top coffee table with silver/bronze legs will be more sophisticated and make the space look larger too. Good luck.

I've just had a similar dilemma trying to decide on how to liven up the boring white bathroom we ended up with thanks to a well known tile supplier mucking up big time. I've hopefully given it some bling by using this ornate frame on some art work. If you don't want a plain edge mirror, you could do something like that?? My frame arrives tomorrow (yay). If you'd like a pic of what it looks like hung on a white wall, feel free to sing out. We ummed and arrred about incorporating a mirrored shaving cabinet into our reno. We did, and it's way more practical than before. Everything is within easy reach. All is hidden and off the benchtop, which makes it neater and so much easier to clean. Most bathroom essentials (like soap, spray cans, toothpaste, razors, lotions etc) fit easily on the 15cm shelves. In fact, the cupboard under the vanity is now virtually empty and there's no kneeling on the floor, digging in the back of it to find stuff! The loo paper fits in a vanity drawer, so it's also out of the way. Bonuses all round. I agree with suggestions to relocate the towel holder (if you can, of course).

that's a relief i thought you meant two sinks for the washing machine and a third for hands! my suggestions includes a separate laundry cupboard with either a drop in skinny tub with underbench washer or stacked washer and dryer with skinny tub and bifold door, a double walk in shower with grab rails and low down taps that can be reached from outside with an overhead and handheld shower for showering while seated...rotate and raise the toilet higher for a little more comfort and privacy and add a grab rail with integral toilet roll holder, wall hung vanity for easy access for extra towels, toilet paper and toiletries and so slippers, floor mats, waste bins and scales etc can be under the vanity out of the way when necessary, mirror doored wall cabinets and an extra shelf could be extended across over the top of the vanity and toilet for more counter area and there's just enough room for a small shower chair (used inside and out of the shower and much better and cheaper than fixed shower seat), several easy access locations for towels and don't forget clothes hooks on the back of the door

my first suggestion has minimal plumbing changes and no wall changes although i would reverse hinges on the entry door, space for a 90 x 90 shower and rotating the toilet should be quite straightforward for a 730 wide toilet space ( a little tight but adequate for most people especially if you're ok with a 620 door) a standard 1500 x 450-500 vanity will fit under the window and the gap at one end is ideal for hanging a hairdryer with a handtowel rail higher up the wall, there's wall space next to the shower for a bath towel rail and a mirror doored wall cabinet would be ideal...and, for a little more expense another option with a double shower.. a relative term with bathrooms that are always more expensive than expected but well worth obtaining quotes to find out costs for both options for comparison..ie do you want a generous shower or vanity? btw i think moving walls in a solid brick house has potential unwelcome surprises and doesn't improve options and installing different fixtures will need new flooring and waterproofing anyway so no better time to do a full upgrade and changes to the floor is the best way to achieve a walk in shower but you need to discuss with a plumber before making any decisions
