Glass splashbacks - yay or nay?
Comments (85)It must depend what you cook. I don't do fried, spitty type dishes and the grout around the largish tiles in my now 10 year old kitchen is as good as new. I rubbed car wax into the freshly laid grout lines, same as I did in the bathroom. It also depends on how much light bounces around your kitchen, glass being so reflective shows up smears with light on it. Just above the kettle in the first photo is a good example. Each to their own, I'm a non-glass girl whenever I can get away with it....See MoreIs there anything better than a window splashback with views?
Comments (9)I must agree (by personal experience) with the warning by 'therockster' - the idea of window splashback is tantalising, with such daylight coming in and the view drawing the eye outwards - heavenly. But the day to day reality will quickly contradict your dream - activity at the kitchen sink creates constant splashes, with each little splash marking the glass. One's lovely outlook can soon become a constant chore, or we learn to turn a frustrated blind eye, regretting our designer dream. To dear Georgi02 - great attitude, diligently working to keep your household clean and shiny - you do have a good system which stands by you. However, we all have different levels of commitment, and ways and means of managing. For me, to avoid wiping over the same surface frequently, again and again, is an important part of staying sane in a full life. I want to continue to feel good about the jobs that need to be done, without unnecessary repetition and hyper-vigelence. If remaining preoocupied with constant window cleaning is not your idea of fun, then steer clear of a low window backsplash, and avoid mirrors that are elegantly low behind the bathroom basin, and even sinks in the middle of one's shiny island bench cause constant mopping up as they have no backsplash at all! These features are appealing in appearance but can create frequent unnecessary extra work. There are many ways to create an elegant inspiring light-filled work space without adding to the chores....See MoreWhich is the most timeless splashback material of all?
Comments (17)I love our glass splash back. We choose an electric blue as the rest of our kitchen has a lot of timber, white and windows. Easy to keep clean, withstands the heat of the stove and you can choose any colour you like. you can even match it with an existing wall colour if you wanted to. The aluminium one sounds good, but I think that in our climate with salty air and a lot of moisture it would show corrosion spots very quickly. macymacmaples, I agree that there are a lot of choices for tile, but the 'easy to replace' comment doesn't really make sense to me. Then again, I have no idea how easy it would be to replace our splash back, which is wedged between the overhead cupboards and the benchtop - I still love it though, even after 10 years!!!...See MoreKitchen window splashback - feedback please!
Comments (9)We've moved into our build 6mth ago, with a new window splashback. We don't have a view out it. We have a 4.5m wide house and needed to give the illusion of extra width. The extra light is nice. At the moment we are looking onto a blank beige wall of the house next door. I'm toying with faux green wall or having a mural painted. I like to take my time with these decisions. Anyway- home truths. No I don't clean it each time I wash up. When I do, it is dirtier on the outside anyway. Do I see the spots? No. I used to have a solid glass splashback in our last house- it drove me nuts! I think because your eye is drawn outside, it detracts from the splash. Whereas with solid colour anything- all you see is the splatters. We got toughened glass. My stove/hob is not against it. Go for it- you will love it....See Moreoklouise
