Which would you rather, a hi-tech home or simple living?
Comments (8)And in the storms last week, we had a 24 hour blackout!! I'm with wuff - just how simple is simple. I think there is quite a bit of difference between labour saving devices and technology now. Labour saving devices became more and more essential as our lives got busier, women were freed from the drudgery of housework and given encouragement and the freedom to grow, seek out careers and a life outside the home. In many ways, I feel technology is putting us back in our homes and not encouraging us to explore the outside world. We are letting too much technology take over our lives and we are not interacting with people like we did in the old days. The other disadvantage with technology is its continual need to be updated and upgraded which can not only be expensive but also requires constant learning. Take TVs for example - in the olden days you bought a set plugged it in and that was it, now they have to be specially installed and set up and for the average person to know how to do this and understand it is not easy. Older people are being disadvantaged by all this technology too, they were not raised with it like the young ones today so it is constant learning, even learning a whole new language, and quite frankly there comes a time in life when head space just reaches saturation point....See MorePOLL: Would you rather a freestanding kitchen bin or under-sink bin?
Comments (15)Under sink bin added when we moved to our home 18 years ago as there was not a lot of floor room. Opening door was awkward. However now with an updated kitchen it was suggested to have pull out bin in island bench. Chop food on bench then scraps into bins. Too easy. It is practical, more room to move around work zones with re configuration. If you empty regularly it is not a problem with odour and part of the integrated design. Its clever cabinetry....See MorePOLL: Would you rather a hammock or egg chair?
Comments (3)My dad had a hammock when I was a kid. He loved it. It was the only time he could relax, read in peace and drink a beer without my mother putting him to work. But I diverge...I enjoyed the odd loungeabout in a hammock, but I'm now at the age where I think it's best I avoid making a scene trying to extract myself out of one. So, it's an egg chair for me....See MorePOLL: Would you rather a handyman or a new husband?
Comments (26)Sorry to hear of your loss, M L, and my condolences to you. I would also choose my husband - he was brought up old-school and is very much the handyman. Only problem is - being an ex-engineer, he is extremely fastidious and has a tendency to over-engineer everything. Combined with the fact that he is very busy with work and has very little free time, our home renovation is taking absolutely foreeeeeeeeever (six years and counting)! No chance of us ever hiring a handyman - they would never do the job to his satisfaction, so he'd just end up ripping it all up and doing it again himself....See Morepascoeyvonne
