The correct dimensions for steps if I'm not wrong, as we're currently building is, maximim riser being 190mm and minimum tread is 240mm. The riser cannot be different meaning that you can decide on any hight but not exceed 190mm and however many steps you decide on, all risers must be the same, whether they are the maximum height or slightly less. Your steps are definitely illegal and quite unsafe as you say and should never have been made this way. I wouldn't raise the first step to the timber riser because if you get rain, it could flow over the step and into your home. The small step if extended right to the front of what is your second step would be the easiest and correct fix, if the height doesn't exceed 190mm from the bottom of the first step once you take up the height which looks to be only about 50mm at best plus whatever the height is of the first step which does look to be less than 190mm, perhaps 150mm but I'm guessing?? Could be that you should only have had one step ever!!.....hopefully the height from the ground up to the timber riser isn't more than 190mm and your laughing!! The riser height is a tried and tested height for a person to lift their foot from one step to the next. If you are not selling for some time or ever, then it's not about being legal but being safe and if your measurement ends up being say 210mm for example, that would still be better that 50mm and 150mm or whatever the height actually is currently. As for tread, again, once you choose a measurement at or over 240mm, every tread must also be the same. If it's wider than 240mm, it allows for a person to place their foot squarely without stubbing their toes on the riser or feeling like their heel is hanging off the step. We have gone for quite large treads on our entry steps being about 500mm wide and it also looks nice if the tread is wide on a large or wide entry like ours being a few metres wide as we have double front doors at our entry once the home is finished. I've included a close up of the steps as well as a full shot of the home with the frame already up if the photo's have uploaded properly. Your steps need to be removed and lengthened to the correct dimensions but a qualified builder is probable the way to go, as any builder can tile or reccomend a tiler once the steps are fixed. Do you have saw palmetto, it is a native groundcover plant in Florida, that has a tropical look and covers the ground through underground shoots, and would give you a bold look, in which you could weave an entrance walk from the street to your entrance terrace at the foot of your front steps. A less tropical choice would be spreading juniper. No lawn, just beds of shrubs. Be simple and bold. When you build your front steps, please use dimensions for outdoor steps. That is, the tread should be at least 12'(30 cm) and the ratio of risers to tread should be approximate: two risers plus one tread equals 26"(66 cm).

ok hubby tucked in bed now. where was i? this is gonna sound crazy, but i read this once and adored, just have not gotten enough jeans yet. a woven jeans rug! but not the old timey wrap in a circle type. I also like recycled leather like belts, maybe you could them as an edging. I would make my rug square I think. i am also constantly trying to come up with ideas for old ties. You get them cheap enough and they can be so cool. but you have to mix them with something?

Hi @Siriuskey, I don't charge as your designer would for his time so I hope my furniture and colours don't put you off. Firstly I have to tell you...noting you have drawn or suggested has put me off...in fact quite the opposite. I would not have considered an open stair case without seeing your 3D projection. We now WILL head down this direction. So kudos to you for helping me think on this. Just revive the thinking on your stairs, they do take up a lot of passage and study space, cramping it. As much as I might like to move the stairs, I am somewhat restricted for various reasons I have mentioned. I honestly dont think they take up a bunch of room and I think where they are postioned maximses the family spaces. Just looking at your own 3D model for the position of the front door it all looks great. My CAD program is a lot older than your designers but it was top end Nothing at all wrong with your program or your diagrams. They really helped us with a positive direction which our own designer didnt come up with and now agrees with. Once again I would still like you to re think your stairs, this deals with the bi fold doors (why are they glass) and the anomaly of the windows. I really cant do a lot with the stairs or the position of the wall in the corridor for the study. There are a number of considerations around loading which I cant easily combat. Making the staircase open I think really adds a lot of dimension to the space and actually makes it work. We haven't decided on what the bi-folds will look like.
