Island range - can I use ceiling extraction fan instead?

Hi, first time poster long time lurker ;) I have a cooktop going in an island, and with very high ceilings and a strict budget, I can't afford downdraft or ceiling mount ranges. I want the open look so am wondering if a good quality extraction fan in the ceiling will get the job done.

The kitchen is extremely well ventilated with a wall of louvres and the high ceilings. I just hate the look of canopy ranges that sit in the middle of everything.

Would welcome your advice and thoughts.

Like you we have our cook top in the island, we also have high ceilings and very well ventilated so no extraction fan. You could add a ceiling fan to gently force the air down if you found you needed it. The only extraction fan I would have over an island would be built into a slim suspended box of whatever shape you wanted, this can have extra down lights fitted as well cheers

I believe it is possible to extract the cooking smells, steam etc downwards, so you wouldn't see the fan. You would need to make some enquiries about those. If you have an extraction fan that isn't vented to outside the air is filtered and returned to the room which is almost the same as not having one. You just have to realise that the ceiling will need repainting sooner than otherwise and the ceiling fan and tops of cupboards need degreasing more often. Is one of those extraction fans that come up out of the bench a too expensive option?

We have a glass rangehood similar to Futuro Futuro's Acqualina Glass product and I love it. The top and bottom of the glass gets given a clean about once a week with citrus multi-purpose cleaning spray and then wiped down with a moistened glass cleaning cloth for a pristine finish. Takes around 5 minutes in total. Cleaning the brushed stainless part is more difficult. As mentioned previously, its hard to remove all the marks. Will definately try the WD40. Me, personally, I don't like the mirrored finish. Given the window is acting as the "splashback" I would have gone for something invisible like what Sheryl Horton showed.

I'm about to put a cooktop on the 2.3 x 900 peninsular (island with only one free end ( in my new galley kitchen. I am using an induction top so it can be fitted flush with the benchtop surface, allowing me to use the whole area as benchtop when not in use. I intend to have bar stolls on the living room side for entertaining. My joiner has suggested making a beautiful, thin timbercover to go over the glass induction surface for added protection. I just need to decide on down draft induction hob or a ceiling casette. My main aim is to remove the smelly cooking smells from my unit. The smell from one evening of cooking indian chicken curry currently lasts at least a week! Any advice?

To assist with harnessing the sea breeze suggest a beautiful long narrow feature window that follows either side of the pitch of the roof (which will let in a lovely sky view plus breeze), or just have the top triangle as a window. Understand the desire to have the small window there however in a room with big glass/window features, the small window looks like an after thought and is at the wrong scale.

You can get slim range hoods that generally fit into the wall cabinets ours were approx 40cm deep which housed the complete operation, our plumber ran a 6 or so inch flexable ducting into the roof cavity and out under the eaves. Most brands make these. Yes the downdraft extraction units are thousands as well.
