Any advice on traditional light switches?

Hi everyone! I'm very slowly renovating our family home and at the moment and starting to paint the living room. Our house is quite similar to some of the homes of The Block - and share many features (same doors etc). I noticed that they were installing old-fashioned black round light switches (are they Bakelite?) and I'd love to do this in our home.
It is a QLD home (but not technically a 'queenslander') with VJ walls so I feel these would look nicer than the current power switches as they modern ones are very bulky - VJs have no wall cavity to hide the bulk of them inside.
I am wondering if anyone knows much about these light switches. Are they easy enough to source? Are they compatible / easy to install? Do they need to be installed with a wood block behind?
