Need decor ideas for family room
Comments (68)A suggestion that the professionals use and makes it SO much easier choosing colours - and then the perfect shade of that colour. Get a paint swatch of the Hog's Bristle - or paint a little sample card from leftover paint. Bring home 5 or 6 samples shades of navy from the paintshop to get the the closest shade/tone of navy to your couch. Armed with those - and a sample of your bench colour - hit the shops with confidence! You will see easily which yellow, or which Marsala or which 'whatever-colour-you-choose' looks great. There are many shades that might look like they work in the store, but when you get them home will be NQR,,,,you know, not quite right....and you still may not be thrilled with your room. It's a simple and almost foolproof way of choosing colour and has worked for me throughout many renovations.Couldn't do it without those little bits of colour! Have fun......See MoreInspiration needed for family room
Comments (7)This is a great space with lots of potential! If you put shelves where the black lamp is, I would suggest also putting the same set of shelves on the other side of the TV to help balance the TV wall. Alternatively, you could put floating shelves on the vacant wall to the left of the TV (first pic) and that will free up the TV wall for a longer entertainment unit when you look at replacing the furniture. I would add a more commanding floor lamp to replace the current one - something that will take up a little more room. A tripod lamp would look best and you can find them really inexpensively these days from Kmart or Freedom. With the artwork, make sure all pieces are hung at the same height, and at an average persons height eye level. To minimise the look of clutter, have all pictures and art in the same frames where possible. Where the Red ottoman is, you can create a nice a wall of family photos all in the same frames. If you purchase some art, get one nice piece with colours that you love. Then select up to two colours from the art and find some scatter cushions for the lounge. This will really lift the room without costing a fortune. If you're on a budget, Shop at Freedom when there's sales - you'll be able to find some really good modern pieces that aren't overly expensive. Finally, Make sure the TV is not mounted too high - Have someone sit on the lounge and guide the person hanging it. Good luck and remember to keep it simple. :)...See MoreNeed help for my back room rumpus, family room and bedroom layout
Comments (4)Hi Charles, Firstly, I am not a designer or anything but I have just spent over 12 months planning & designing my house so I've looked at heaps of plans & I've done lots of research. This is what I have come up with.. I think you can leave it with the same layout and just extend the wall off the rumpus. Yes it eats in to you bi-fold doors but I have a plan to counteract that & not sacrifice the light & open plan. Using corner stacker doors (much cheaper than bi-fold) will open this space right up to the alfresco area. Not sure what you had planned for this area but if you were planning on having a built in bbq area it could be done on the back of the rumpus room wall (in the space where I extended the wall). I also think you will have more flexibility if you have doors entering the rumpus rather than sliding doors as you can use the wall space without having to worry about the wall cavity. I printed your plan off & had a play so check it out & see what you think. I will not be offended however if you don't like my ideas as its your house & it needs to suit you & your family. All the best with it, I know how hard & stressful it is! Shae...See MoreMy family room.
Comments (10)Hello Lene1, My first thoughts are you have too many small art pieces, not just only pictures, trying to compete for attention against large items of furniture, hence the rooms at odds with itself because the items are not relative to each other. If you can imagine taking down all your pictures and removing all your small decor items around the tv, small table in the corner and fire place, what you're left with is a nice size room with appropriate sized furniture. Now, you could consider a larger art piece or pieces for your walls and the room will look relative. Another alternative to consider would be to get a wall mural or wall stickers for the wall behind the fire place. Either way, this will make that wall a feature as well as reduce the attention of the tiny fireplace you have that can't be moved, then the eyes are drawn to the bigger picture instead. Regarding wall stickers, tree and branch wall stickers have been used very creatively to compliment the many smaller framed pictures like they have blossomed from the tree branches like this one for example: May I also suggest having a look at my BESPOKE DESIGNS section. I specialise in designing and creating artwork to specifically compliment a rooms decor and furnishings, and here you will find inspirational ideas of other rooms: http://www.houzz.com/projects/1720017/bespoke-designs Alternatively, there are many artwork pieces that are ready and available to buy from our website also: http://thejonescollection.gallery If I can be of further assistance, feel free to contact me via my Houzz profile or through my website. All the best with whatever you decide to choose....See MoreBelle Homes Design & Construction
