That is really not right Racheal and that builder would know it's not. We have just moved into our new build and thankfully this was not an issue. My issues however are mostly paint related; splotches and smears of paint on our brand new floor in EVERY room, the front door has got to be replaced because of the dodgy paint job. The back door should really be replaced as well. Most of the window sills need another coat of paint as the undercoat colour can be seen. To top all that, my beautiful black kitchen has got white overspray primer on the kick boards and some of the big drawers. I'm so disappointed. I've told the builder that I don't want that painter back in my new home to fix the issues as I'm afraid of what stuff ups will happen with him in charge of the paint again but if I don't have him back to fix everything I will have to do it myself.

I agree it looks wrong and I would be asking the builder to clarify the 'maintenance reason' and 'product improvement' which sounds like an excuse to step around the issue. The only possible reason that the basin is so far back could be the length of the wall spout is too short to reach the basin? Is it the same tapware and undermount basin in the display home? Is it possible the slab benchtop was installed 180 degrees the wrong way? If the installer has made a mistake then it should be rectified by the builder. If you have selected a wall spout that is too short to reach a centrally located basin somebody should have advised you of this issue, but it is not really the builders mistake. Hi Dr Retro, thanks for your input. We have specified identical wall mixer as display home so really no excuse there for the builder. Funnily enough they suggest that the display home installation is wrong and should have been like ours.

I agree with all previous comments. They’re really trying to wriggle themselves out of this mess!
But stand your ground - it’s easier and more cost effective for everyone (the builder should pay) to fix this now rather than when it’s all completed and you have to live with the error. Looking at material cost and labour hours.
If it’s from the show home then it is “what you see is what you get” and you saw a different basin fitment...even if that is now wrong it’s what you saw..
Keep at it! You’re getting your dream home and keep it that way!

Keep pushing - if it goes to the owner he’ll get more annoyed at his staff as to why he would have to get involved and why his staff are to incompetent to sort it themselves

Thanks for insight Paul. I suppose there are two possible solutions if it must stay closer to the wall: have bigger basin or replace with shallower bench top.

Failing all the advice here take it to the Consumer affairs or an ombudsman if you get no where with the builder and tell him you intend to do so, you are paying for the house you saw and wanted the same, as for the 'fake' reason he gave about the display home should have been the same then if that were true he should have added that 'mistake' in explanation before he sold you the package as it is something that will bug you, can you arrange for a plumbing and or building inspector to come and help you with the right approach?

Just keep plugging away and don't give up you should not be paying to live with a mistake, simple as that!! You could tell them you will take it to a current affairs program on TV, I am sure he won't want bad publicity, play hard ball if you have to, don't settle for less than you pay for and wanted. It’s wrong but we all know why he’s denying it, to rectify this he needs to replace the whole stone bench and that’s expensive. Don’t give up.
