Exterior render colour on extension

Hey guys,

We are extending upstairs and need to pick a colour for the render. This is a pic of our home at present. Red brick and Ironstone colour windows and trims. When we go up we are having Ironstone windows and I want a grey colour for the render. I know a lot of people go a lighter contrast but I like the grey look as long as it's not too dark or light. We get full afternoon sun on the front. Just wondering if anyone has done a similar thing and what grey was a good contrast to the Ironstone.

Fiona, you have a very traditional looking home, with some nice rustic looking brickwork. A rendered box added to the first floor is going to look like it was plonked in with it's contemporary smooth finish contrasting with the traditional, ground floor. Had you considered some other forms of lightweight cladding such as James Hardie's Linea weatherboards, which are much more low-maintenance than traditional weatherboards and work well for first floor extensions to traditional homes? Less labour to install weatherboard than to render a first floor.

Thanks I'll give that a look for sure. This is a pic of a home that gave me the colour inspiration. Even though the bricks and render colour are more of a warm brown colour. I was hoping with the render being grey it would tie in better. Thanks for the tip of the weatherboards!

The grey on the western wall looks dark and purplish on my monitor. It may come over as too imposing and monolithic on the southern face. If you're sticking with the grey palette then a warmer tone would suit the sandstone better. Does Dulux have a colour palette recommendation that includes your Berkshire White plus a grey? Check online or in store pamphlets. But, for such a big, expensive, and impactful paint job I would actually be tempted to get a colour consultant. You're not just repainting a loungeroom wall if it doesn't work!

Hi Sophia, I think a dark grey with a hint of mauve would look spectacular and keep the whole home looking cool. What's more, when your garden and trees grow, the greens will complement the colour. Then a touch of red in plantings of kangaroo paw, bottle brush or hibiscus or even a flame tree would make the neighbours applaud your colour choices for sure.
