Would appreciate your feedback on bathroom renovations

Hi all,

Looking to renovate a 3.3m x 2m bathroom and am keen for advice on layout, particularly thoughts on whether a bath should be included.

I have done a rough mockup of my plan to date, acknowledging that it might be a little off scale!!

Sizing:

Vanity is 1200 wide (could get smaller size of 900, but am concerned it's too small)
Bath is 750 deep (1700 wide)
I am unsure how big the shower and toilet space should be

I need an open shower so that it's accessible for a family member who is in a wheelchair, but the bath is more of a nice-to-have with consideration to resale value.

Your thoughts would be genuinely appreciated!

Hi, the vanity would have to be 900mm to have a comfortable area for toilet and shower. Room is 3300mm less vanity 900mm less bath 750mm less toilet area 800mm less shower 850mm. You could have a set up similar to the attached photo. This would allow wheelchair access directly into shower.

Hi Micheal, the open shower is a great start for a wheelchair user but you will also need to consider the turning circle of the chair in a small space. In order for them to use the toilet and basin you will require extra space. Ideally the shower would be 900 mm wide. Will the toilet require grab bars?

thanks OkLouise. we do have plans for other work in the house but not on the adjoining rooms which are bedrooms. The sliding door which I am considering blocking off leads to the back bedroom and kitchen but there is already a large laundry and second toilet next to these which we are considering making into a small shower room in the future.

Yes keep the bath. 99% of my clients still request a separate bath. My wife and daughter still use one. Young kids still love a bath. I would look further into relocating the return air for ducted. Its not really central to the house anyway so could be underperforming. Probably easier to relocate it as this can open up opportunities for better bathroom layout. Whats in the space between laundry and kitchen, looks like a wasted area that could allow a bigger laundry, linen cupboard with space for return air.... 2480 x 1800 is plenty of room for the smaller bathroom. Allow 900 for shower, 900 for toilet and 900 for a vanity. Lot of layouts that you could try. Use a 720 door if need be. 2480 x 1800 for the other bathroom would be say 900 shower with a 1500 bath. Relocating return air and adjusting the door location and the walls would allow a reasonable bathroom layout and more layouts and a bigger bath. Note: door location is critical to the layout and not overly expensive to change compared to the money spent on rest of bathroom.

Budget Bathrooms Melbourne, my course is through Open Colleges however (sadly) they don't teach us in great detail about technical drawings. We spend the first 13 modules, manually drawing our concept designs, and from Module 14, we begin to learn AutoCAD and also 3D modelling on SketchUP. After I complete the course, I am hoping to look into architecture at University, as they teach you everything about technical drawings however, Kitchen and Home Sketch Design's referral of Arch Draft course at Holmeglen TAFE sounds interesting! for comfortable wheelchair use there needs to be space about 1500mm wide to turn around and a 900mm wide bathroom entry door and i suggest having a full width drive in shower with a curtain and no glass screen, low taps at one end to attach a hand held shower or later bath taps and standard shower taps at the other end with grab rails around the shower and toilet and suitable drainage in the floor to be able to add a bath later if necessary for resale..if planned carefully straight grab rails also make excellent towel rails as well as aids for moving safely
