Hey Paul, check out a place called ecooutdoors.com.au for inspiration. I'm not sure if they're up your way but I'm sure you could get materials shipped. They have such a beautiful store with brilliant ideas. I'd be considering a stone that is cool under foot on hot Brisbane days and at least 30mm thick. You have an oval-ish shaped pool so you might consider a small coping stone to replace the brick then move on to a larger stone instead of the dated pebble, maybe a 'cush' limestone or go a bit glam and do a herringbone pattern with the right stone. Hey Camira1999, your pool area has huge potential. We love the wooden element you've added to your outdoor area. You could also add in some more foliage to the area, like we did in the projects below. Lacquering the back fence will also make a difference to the feel of the pool area. We also are manufacturers of DIY glass pool fences, balustrades, mirrors and splashbacks - you can pick up fences in a range of styles (ie: semi frameless, frameless with or without mini posts,etc) from your local Bunnings. Thanks. So, you could have access to a external tap garden near by? You could put some small irrigated vertical gardens in this space and plant out some grasses or low growing or cascading plants. This option will require some thought to the wall structure and allow the water to drain away and keep the wall space relatively dry. The other could be (the photo is not good to see) run horizontal wires internally in a set spacing you desire on the timber cladded wall. Then, plant outside in that corner (in ground or in a large pot) and grow a climbing plant (star jasmine or similar) and train it to grow on the wires you set inside that space. This will tone down some of the hard materials and add some softness... Just a thought!

I am sorry I am going to disagree with Julie Herbert. A "feature" contrasting material to the existing decking is not going to be a "design statement", rather it will always look like you are trying to fill in a hole where the bay window used to be. Every time you use this door it won't look like a design statement, but a ghostly constant reminder of the old bay window. Better to remove the old decking that is adjacent to the hole, and replace with new decking of the same width and profile along the wall. Tidy up the remaining decking and refinish the new and old timber at the same time with the same decking finish. The outline of the old bay window will be lost forever and the difference between old and new will be minimal. Putting in new decking is simple and cost effective, bringing in different materials, such as tiles or stone is not simple or cost-effective. Best of luck, Dr Retro of Dr Retro House Calls.
