We were engaged to build a modern country home on the Central Coast north of Sydney. The location for the house was surrounded by very large trees in a clearing of about 60 metres. The trees posed a problem if they fell on the house. The house also needed on site water supply of 120,000 litres as well as a dedicated on site sewerage treatment system. Bushfires were also a potential problem. The trees also overshadowed the house at certain times of the year. Council had limited the amount of clearing we could do as the house was in an environmentally and ecologically sensitive area.

Our design solution was to bed the house on top of two tanks that created the foundations for the house. The space underneath the house between the two tanks was to be used as a safe room when the winds were high or a bushfire threat loomed.

A ‘T’ shaped plan allowed for the main open plan area and master bedroom to be housed in one wing and the two guest bedrooms in a seperate wing with a central breezeway separating the two wings and a stairway that leads up to the roof top where a ‘Sky Room’ was built for gazing out at the tree tops, catching some rays or star gazing at night. On dark nights glow works can be seen.

The on-site sewerage treatment system is a specialised worm treatment farm – no chemicals – the worms do all the work for you.

When you engage an architect to build a country home make sure they have experience building on country areas – there are important areas of expertise that city architect simply don’t have such as Wastewater Treatment, Stormwater treatment & drinking water as well as other potential areas like building in bushfire zones & delivery of power to the property. All of these areas need special attention, up to date advice of potential systems and knowledge of the impact on your budget.
