Love the ceiling. But what do you like. Painted can look great too, it really is a personal preference.
Usually Extend before landscaping as they may trash it otherwise if u are extending. This Depends on their material storage beds and access needs so consider that for your site.
Flouro is that a box skylight with lights around it? I had one in my bathroom and added a frosted Perspex sheet. But with a polished wood kitchen I would ayb3 look at a timber grid as a feature. You could change the flouros to new flat panel LED batten lights and line the box with matching timber. Or patch the ceiling back up being careful to splice the new wood into the existing wood. Or add a feature light into the space. Hard to know without seeing more pics

The ceiling , and the brick feature , and the wooden windows , date the design -- in a good way ! They add warmth and character IMO .

Do you know for a fact that the light box was cut in later ? To me , it looks part of the design , with those ( stainless ? ) spotlights being the same era . As Kate says , you can go LED , but I like that it all works in together .

I assume the pics are real estate pics , and the furniture may be different now , but personally I would add some colour -- change the black stools for red industrials of the same style ; the TV cabinet doesn't suit -- too dark IMO . In fact , imagine the TV wall-mounted on the brick 'chimney' -- high enough up that the heater won't affect it . The print is clever -- modern , colourful , but blends in . On the wall somewhere close to the existing TV position , I'd add a painting or print -- a different size and style to the print , to add interest .

What a great basis to work with though -- DO NOT add any more white or off-white or grey though .

Oh dear who thought putting that heater on the feature chimney and the exhaust fan in ceiling was a good idea.

I'm such an idiot that I thought the grille was a speaker grille ! But depending on what you want to do , and whether it actually works as a fan , you could ( especially if you are going to move the TV ) use it to house a sub , and add several small white speakers on small stalks ( brand name or from Jaycar etc ) to add to the overall experience !

Or if really budget , buy a stuffed set off E-bay for $10 or whatever , spray them crisp white , and bolt them up there -- they won't work , but they look like a $2000 European brand ones haha !

Don't paint the ceiling and don't rush into extending until you have lived in the house for at least 12 months so that you understand how it works with the seasons and the extremes of temperatures. Landscaping is always after building work - as most tradesmen don't respect your plants. One of my clients said that they should be called treadsmen after her garden was trodden down!

Look carefully at your lighting options, especially wall sconces and uplights to make the most of the beautiful timber ceiling. Once painted it can never be re-instated back to a timber ceiling easily. While this is your new home you are not going to live their forever. If you paint your ceiling the next owners will curse you, and wonder why you vandalised such a beautiful and expensive feature.

If after 12 months of living with it you still hate it then consider a subtle lined finish, which will work with the original architecture of your home, but won't conceal the beautiful grain and character completely.
