I like the bricks and their texture My advise : fill the gaps in the bricks with more mortar use either white or natural in colour keeping the lines as straight an even as possible I think I was on the boral website the other day and they had a link where you could play around with different cladding and mortar Paint the beams in with the ceiling and add as much white/China white/antique white paint as possible Alternatively go to Pinterest search colour palettes or colour combinations You will definitely find some unreal colour ideas there Libby rip out the carpet and see what's underneath if concrete get it polished if timber do the same

thanks for your comments- initially I'm going to install a couple of sky windows/lights to get the light in, paint all the existing walls (Whisper White/China White or something similar) and then go from there...I agree, make changes as we go: easier to whitewash a brick or wooden wall or two when required than paint the whole interior at the outset and regret having painted the whole thing and take away all of the features. Some artwork will help too. Long term addiction coming up!

If the brick is a functioning chimney I would leave it other wise a rough render could work. One of the issues is that the nearby features such as the light and painting clash. As in the dining room, try a large mirror and a big photo e.g. to link it all. Also good rugs with strong reds, browns, oranges would help co-ordinate the rooms at low expense. I would try a colourful Moroccon style rug near the brick feature before attempting a major fix.

If you want to make the house hotter, then painting the roof charcoal will certainly achieve that. Repointing the brickwork is the most sensible from a maintenance perspective. Once you render and paint, then you have to keep painting (and it's likely to be out of fashion sooner or later). Try to keep passive cooling in mind (i.e. light colours & permeable landscaping) with any of your renovations, and I think it always pays to try and embrace and compliment the original architecture and be unique, rather than trying to look like the latest project home. In my opinion the arch window is actually quite cool, and the excellent mock-ups provided by Geo Toria are along the right track.
