Front garden design ideas for sloping block east coast Tasmania

Hi everyone. Looking for some help as to what to do with this sloping front yard.
Location east coast of Tasmania with ocean view and frost free.
House faces East and slope is North to South as well as West to East.
Possibly a retaining wall in sleepers and a tropical look design. All grass to be removed except nature strip. Area is 11.5 x 8.0 metres at front and 16.0 x 2.4 metres at side.
The area under the patio would likely be shade loving plants and would more than likely need small retaining wall to prevent spillage onto driveway which is new.
Look forward to any input.
P.S. Stairs and verandah are yet to be painted, as is one of the roller shutters stripes.

Do you have a view? If not add height with some trees. I’d work with Tasmania’s natural beauty and go with natives. Gardening with Angus has a great plant selector on his site. You could go lush green and sophisticated with mass plantings of different size Acacia (Limelight, Fettuccine and Cousin it) and under planted with Lomandra (Verday or similar).

I think you will have a difficult time achieving a tropical look in Tasmania, and at the same time missing out on one of the best things about living there. The temperate climate. You have access to garden species that those of us in the warmer states could only dream about. Why not use that?

I'm not convinced you need a retaining wall anywhere except possibly under the patio.

You definately need some bushes between 1-2m in height in that empty garden bed near the port box, to add a bit of visual interest and take away the fisheye effect of the sloping land. You are definately going to need either deciduous or frost hardy species.

Off the top of my head these would do well there....

Silver birch, weeping or upright. It's a beautiful tree that loves the cold weather and gives you the added bonus of as much natural sunlight to your home as possible during winter when you need it. Also lovely soft screening that won't become a jungle in the front of your home. Pairs beautifully with Japanese maples for a lovely woodland look.

Rhododendrons make a wonderful feature plant with it's spectacular display of flowers. If one of these is too large look to azalea's which are just low growing relatives.

Under your deck seems like the perfect location for a Tassie native, the Dicksonia. Come on how could you not grow these?

Why not keep it simple & have a nice sculpture or ornamental pot surrounded by ground covers You could add some large round rocks surrounded by ground covers like star jasmine, black & green dwarf mondo grass, lomandra, native violet etc & a low wide bowl type water feature & maybe just one architectural feature plant rather than a climber. Pony tail palms are very hardy & not every one's cup of tea but they store water in their bulb and are interesting plants that look after themselves. If it is dry then you will need to choose plants accordingly and to suit your house style and you would need to watch out for invasive roots or have 2 or 3 plants in large pots half buried in the slope that can be watered & leave the rest as ground covers.

ddarroch Thanks for all the great suggestions. Pity indeed about the directions of the sun and view. Can't change the profile of the block only can try to work out the best based on what it is. Very valid points about the heating VS. clerestory windows. We are in the temperate climate region which keeping warm it’s an issue in winter. We have thought about to have low-e glass in the south facing side but looks like we probably need to have double glazing in places like the north facing clerestory windows like you suggest. No ideas how much more double glazing will cost but certainly we need to include a fair amount into our budget. Agree with having a door separating the living from the back of the house like you said. Much better for heating and sound insulation. Again thanks a lot.

Hi Louise, Thank you for replying. My house is in North west of Sydney. The block is flat. The house is split level. There two bedrooms study and bathroom at level1. Inlaws accommodation and garage in the one level under ground level, rest at the ground level. There is a deck at the rear from the family room to the rear garden. I have plans to renovate the whole house but no plans to extend. We have a big front garden but not so big rear garden. We love the dinning area and the family room room at the rear . The front of the house is facing north east. My wife, myself and a 2 month old live in the house. However my parents frequently visit us from overseas and live with us. I also have my sister come visit and stay with us some times. The bath room and the kitchen on the ground floor is facing east and the bathroom and toilet upstairs is facing west. There is no bathroom in the inlaws accommodation. Inlaws accommodation is used for guest for example my sister visits. We prefer open plan arer towards the rear than the front but I am open for suggestions as the kitchen and the living is at the front of the house.

Hello Bianca, I thought that the site plan above was Azam's! I thought beauty: now I can get this plan right for him and the site at last. it has been going back fwd up down for ages! So I sat here and scribbled away as I love to do and blow me down! I am looking at your site dims and directions instead!! So here is a plan suggestion for your site with no idea where you are, what you are wanting, what you like but a few of Azam's requirements! Have a look: it will use your northerly aspect far better than the outline on above: There is more space to the north and west..... much better for passive solar design: read much lower power bills.....
