Ideally I’d have a large Vergola to provide shade. Pull down shades will block view, but shade sails can reduce some sun and still allow some vision (partic black)

We have views to the west so I understand your compromise. Anything that stops the afternoon sun hitting the windows as long as possible does help so the alfresco and the pull-down shade will be useful.

Have a verandah built on that side and you'll be fine.

I know someone who built with glass doors facing west - they sold up after a few years due to the heat.

You should be ok with a veranda facing west. The sun will belt in for what say an hour or so?

Probably a nice place for 22 hours out of the 24. Summer is usually hot so yes it'll be hot but so will south, east, etc....

Hello Mellebret, Suggestions above are great but there is another I would like to put to you: Look at planting deciduous trees out from the west windows and doors. You need to calculate the full height of the trees, the position of the view and where to plant them so the sun is blocked in summer and you can still enjoy the view. Winter when they are bear branches will allow the winter sun to stream in and heat the living areas for FREE! But also you need to be prepared to cut trees lower or trim below for the view as needs be so they do not get too tall, out of control or dangerous. It is a very efficient and beautiful way to control the sun, shade, comfort and beauty. Cheers Margot
