Design Dilemma Before & After

ideas for modernising house facade .

We have a mirror image of this house ( attached) but our facade is currently covered by trees.

We will need a staircase from the pavement going up to the front door. Any ideas for a facade update. We have access to free granite rocks so could incorporate these in the facade. Our carport is set at road level.

Any ideas - something that won’t date too quickly and is not too expensive. thank you

Hi All added a bad shot of the front of the house- hope to get more in a few days . As you can see its very steep and carport will have to be converted into double carport with stairs going up to front of house.

Maybe use some to replace the letterbox and create some flower beds aiming to make little ‘rooms’ in the garden working with your terraces to lead you into different spaces.
Change the fly screens and the fence behind car port as they date the house. With the fence at least square off the arched gate and paint darker or replace with timber slats.
Then there is the panel below windows. How can that be changed or hidden?
Car port is not doing any favours either, but would like to see yours.

I don't think the carport is too bad , but agree with most of Kates ideas .

It seems minor , but the letterbox being a different brick and style just gets the look off to a bad start . And again , those panels are just a bit weird -- it would be hard to get right , but maybe an apricot or a yellow would work for them ? Just one thought that would probably look good may be to keep the flyscreens ( assuming they do their job ) and the cream panel , but paint it charcoal , BUT do 2 or 3 upright poles in steel or wood , also painted charcoal , ground to gutter height , and then have 12 or so cedar battens 50mm x 50mm bolted horizontally , evenly spaced .

I'm guessing $2000-2500 , it would add the timber warmth and more modern look , hide some sins but hopefully won't cut out too much light , nor too much vision . Add some rocks , some pebble gardens , I actually think 'formal' steps would spoil the look , but a series of stepping stones would look informal but structured . Maybe a big glazed pot , especially one in red or blue or green , with some imaginative plants , would all add to everthing .

If your front door is brown , move out haha ( I can't see it clearly enough ) but it sort of works in black . Red or orange might be more noticable and add some brightness for the door , but I actually think the cedar 'shutter' , the lighter bricks , the light carport , and a black door in mostly light colours would suit the house and the era .

Hi Rob , You are entering an exciting time with a new home, good luck with it all . Just a couple of suggestions : (1) Any reason you are note considering an architect to be involved ? When chosen carefully they can be very cost effective , plus they will create the unique custom one off that you are after. Their design concepts will go far beyond just what the exterior looks like Rob, they will also consider ( for example) how a skillion roofline has other functional benefits like incorporating high line ( clerestory) windows that will bring fabulous light into the centre of your new home etc. They will also advise on orientation and wind etc etc and lots more . (2) Regardless of whether an architect is involved, I would suggest that you seriously consider getting someone to create a 3D walkthrough of your new home so that you can walk through and around it before you spend your money on construction. It really does let you see the visual effects, plus because the 3D is to scale , it will help you sort out any potential issues with design and /or construction in advance( i.e. saves you time and money during construction ) . The 3D's can be created once you have your plans and elevations completed. You can get the 3D's created fairly cheaply ( a few hundred $'s ) on www.freelancer.com where professionals from around the globe compete for your project . It is money well spent , and you can see the colours and textures in lifelike scenarios , so it takes away the mystery and what if's . Hi Donna - Look for a company that offer a 10-year warranty and a product that complies with Australian Standards. There are some companies that provide a 'kit' for your builder to install to make it a little bit cheaper again. There are also products that have a 'rack and pinion' design which minimises maintenance and eliminates the need for a motor pit - just do a google search for "dumbwaiter rack and pinion' . Oskuee the illusion of a window is a good idea! Bigreader I can't believe I have forgotten about the chimney, we hadn't even considered this! I think my hubby and you are all right that the idea of rendering the whole front is a no go! Mel N thank you, I have never known what to search for, 'transitional' has come up with a few things that I like I think I'll be on the computer all night now haha!! Oklouise we don't sit on the front balcony as we have a back balcony that's bigger and a nicer surrounding. The stairs are definitely not comfortable, we had considered having the stairs how you have done it in the picture (which by the way is amazing, I'm a visual person so this has really helped). I do really like this idea, what would you do to make it more entry like? Another driveway maybe? I've added another picture (excuse all the mess out the front). Love the 80' house, because you have a lot of sun to deal with a pergola from just above the front door running along the garage wall (minus the furniture) you could set a clear roof on top of the slats for shelter from rain. could even consider a similar pergola at a lower level running across from the front entrance and above the two front windows, these can be built to help block summer sun. Maybe render the garage wall to break up the brick and paint same as the garage door and timber above, this looks pale beige /grey, then this colour above windows remembering that window and door frames are cream, they can be painted. please keep the 80's door celebrate it.

Would be best if you actually post a photo of your frontage. Otherwise the comments do not relate to your frontage and you mentioned the carport is on lower ground, so that is not what we are looking at.
