Living Room Design Dilemma Entry

How to arrange combined entry/living/dining

We've just moved into this unit, it's very cute albeit a little outdated.
The living/dining and entry are all in one spot. The space is small and long - think shoebox. At one end is this beautiful large window which looks onto the courtyard, the other side is the entry to the kitchen.
Looking. for suggestions of layouts. I have a gateleg table for dining that can sit up to 6 people. 2 seater dark brown leather couch. Occassional chairs and a shelving unit (Ivar from IKEA) which acts as tv unit and general decor. We're renting so no nails/paint or Reno's allowed.
I'm mostly wondering if I put the couch somewhere else to create more defined "spaces". Interested to hear your thoughts.

just my personal taste , I'd put the table and chairs in front of the window to the kitchen , and that would fill that area . I'd add a large bright print or artwork on the wall too .

The lounge needs ( just my opinion ) the art changed -- its too plain and nothing to me ( I hope it doesn't have a deep meaning to you ) , and although the rug is nice , I'd like more colour -- a red rug or similar ( even a green or blue or purple etc ) BUT have that as the main colour in you artwork too . Then double down with cushions in a similar tone , and maybe a couple of potplants in pots the same colour .

A riskier strategy may be to put the Ikea unit across the room , 2/3rds of the distance back , with a metre wide gap on the right hand side . The dining area behind it , the couch across in front of the window . You'll still see the view every time you walk to the couch , you can 'spin around' to look if you really want also .

It has a slightly better flow ( if it fits whilst still allowing access around 1 side ) , but I don't really like how everything on the Ikea unit is sort of on display on both sides . Try and get clever and add material and it would look like the cheapest of student flats IMO -- so avoid tacky haha .

Hey thanks for this! more looking for layout suggestions like clever ways to create an entry space etc as the front door is right there. I'd like to space out furniture to make the best of the space. sorry if my post was confusing? Decor and all my plants and things will come at a later date but I want to get the furniture in first 😆

I would pop a buffet along the window by the front door & then a rectangle dining table in front of that. There are a few layouts you could do tv/ lounge wise but in the interest of entertaining & also watching tv whilst preparing meals.... I would put the tv on the wall opposite the built in cupboards - not right where the aerial point is though, closer along the wall towards the bedroom door. Then I'd have an L shape configuration of lounges (either a corner lounge or two lounges) with the back of one along the side wall (the wall you look at as you come in the front door), & the other with its back to the built in cupboards (obviously with enough room to open the doors behind it still. Then define the area with a rug etc

What a lovely room you have. My first thought is to establish where your traffic area is. Each room has a natural traffic flow and you will find it frustrating if you have to divert around furniture. Breaking the room up into zones, i.e. tv watching, play space, dining area etc will make the room feel larger and you will use the space more efficiently. When it comes to tv placement, consider where the light comes in. You will want the screen placed where the light from windows won't fall on it, or where you can close a curtain. Also, whether you want to see the tv from the kitchen, or see the view the same time as watching tv. Consider if you want the space to be a conversation area, where the tv doesn't dominate, or be a dedicated tv watching space. There is a lot to think about and decisions will be based on your family's lifestyle. As for furniture, Ikea have some great items suitable for children and toy storage that are reasonably priced. For the lounge, choose the best you can afford, for the sake of comfort. Try getting one with washable slip covers. The same goes for the rug. A good quality wool rug will last a long time, comes up well with cleaning and can even be redyed at a later stage.

Go with your plan to feature colour Wall A and mount mirror on Wall A and place beachy art work on Wall B. My suggestion is to maybe consider using a paint colour for the featured wall that is tonally similar to paint on Wall B and not too dark so as to give room depth but not close it in with a dark heavy contrasting shade. Offsetting the hanging of the mirror closer (to the plant) could also add interest (and work with the shorter end of the sofa). Often going with you intuition is the best advice!!!

I did a chuckle at the time. I know those moments! I also know people will ask you to post a whole house plan, which way north is, how many people in house etc. A complete house plan would give you much more informed answers.
