Help with exterior colours on large retro Fibro house

Hi there, hoping for ideas on exterior colours for our house. It is quite a long house. Bottom story is brick but only visible from the side and back. Top half is fibro. I want to do trims/garage door in white. Has water views and bush across the road but not a lot of garden in the front though we have potted plants etc. which soften it. The front yard is concrete which is where we park our cars. Since the photo was taken we have added a wooden deck that runs diagonally between the right corner of the shed and the corner of the house. We are also planning a deck off the upper story at the back in the next couple of years.

The rear looks a lot more modern than the front ( I realise it isn't -- just the colours do that ) , so that would be my starting point .

So focus on the rear to start with ( just in your mind -- personally , I'd leave it as it is until you are happy with the front ) . The charcoal eves look good , the dark windows look good , in fact what the minor things are the one white upstairs window ; also the basement being a muddy brown grey whereas the eves look contrasting , the basement looks dirty and mismatched in comparison . And then the fence is fawn .

Okay , so fix that -- buy 10 litres of charcoal and 2 brushes and it will look planned . Paint the railing in bright red or sunshine yellow ( it looks better , but arguably safer too ) and you are there for that side .

The front though -- I think you are versa vice with your idea of white trim . Look at the rear picture , and take the cues . Paint the fibrolite and battens in off-white . Paint the bricks of the front fence in white . Do the eves , almost all the window frames , the base and the fence pailings in charcoal . Almost all ? Yes , the front door and the window frames around them , the garage door and the numbers on the gate I'd do in the bright red or sunshine yellow , the same as that back railing .

Add a couple of modern black framed outdoor lights ( $100 ones , not $20 ones ) , and it suddenly looks 40 years newer for $2k if you do the labour yourself .

I would paint everything paintable white except the fence which I’d do in charcoal. A feature front door in a colour of your choice. And lots of plants in the garden.

Congratulations Aaron on finding your "Forever home" & wanting to preserve it's 70's vibe. It does look like a big project to get your teeth into! I would think the black to be a bit strong & tend towards a warmer tone with the brick. Sandstone is also a light stone with yellows, apricots & warm tones. Woodland Grey from the Colorbond range has olive/brown tones which might suit. It depends on the vision you are trying to achieve but it looks like a natural modern style would suit the theme of the house. By that I mean taking cues from nature for colours. Good luck!

I Like the up down cylinder/square black lights but your lights are high set so it would be just down light. I have a light like the last photo but it's a chunky cylinder instead of square, I think I got it at Bunnings ages ago, it's on an internal courtyard wall and looks amazing when turned on. Could your cousin do one of each, ie: up down and just down, Just down on the entrance as you don't want to light up the entrance ceiling and up down on the tall wall, it would be great if it could be dropped down a bit. cheers

Oh boy oklouise, this is dangerous territory when you ask about the perfect reno! We thought we did have the perfect Reno we could afford in stages but we got just about ready to lodge with council and our architect surprised us with the costings going over by $200K and giving us a lovely flat roof and new cladding for our first stage budget. We now have about $10K less after this process and are really feeling vulnerable I suppose. So we are back to square one but the essentials are: repair the deck on the steep slope at the back, remove internal walls to open the space downstairs, reposition the staircase, new flooring, new kitchen and provide an aesthetically pleasing but functional entrance. Wish list would be garage/carport & driveway, flat roof, new bathroom upstairs, new laundry & WC downstairs and landscaping. $100K for the first stage (which probably means just deck repairs and removing walls?!) then we would be looking at refinancing and seeing what we can do next. The architect designs were beautiful but unattainable unfortunately. Anyway, I advertised our job about a week ago and I think someone is interested in meeting with us and I've also left a message for Dr Retro so I don't want you all to spend too much time on this although I really really appreciate and welcome your advice. The yellow /orange door is great. Be very careful that the undertone of the house colour and door are similar. If you do the door a cool clear orange, you’ll want a cool white and not any grey or warm undertone. As for air con, you can spray paint it any colour with Rustoleum 2x Primer and Paint or build a box around it and paint the box. Check out YouTube. I just did ours two days ago…
