We just bought a house that was built in the 80’s and looking for colour inspiration. any suggestions on exterior paint colour combinations that will modernise the house ?
The house colour at the moment is good. In my opinion it is the boring front garden that needs updating. It is a 1980 home with certain facade details that can not be modernised with paint. Eg arched garage, port hole window. So putting in a garden with suitable plants for your area will help modernise your home. Timber accents and green plants always look fresh and modern. Can the arched porch be removed and a timber portico be installed?
I think the garden is okay -- its tidy , and there is a certain logic to it . Most of the existing paint/render colour is also modern enough too IMO .
I'd do the gutters and barge boards in a darker charcoal ( darker than the entry /planter/garage door ) so you end up with the main wall 'grey' , and 2 charcoals . It looks like the front door is mainly glass but with a wooden frame , I'd paint the front door frame in a bright red or orange , and the garage door the same -- that would add to the overall look , and a little bit of Wow ! As an example of that , look how pleasant that terracota pot looks in the picture .
I love the port hole window but it needs plain glass. I’d paint everything charcoal with a lush green garden. There’s a thread on here where the owner has just painted the exterior a dark colour. And his pictures and the inspiration pictures posted may help you. I’ll see if I can find it.
That would be amazing if you can find the thread, we are planning to extend the bathroom where the porthole is, so it will be replaced by a larger window
As bigreader suggests going charcoal or black would look stunning, replacing the round window with a larger one would look great, love black or dark houses, really make a statement and look fabulous, you have an ideal house for that, going dark all the arches will blend in seamlessly, adding a lush modern garden and you will definitely have the wow factor.
If you’re replacing things like gutters or garage doors. Or want your shedding to match then look at using a Colourbond colour. Monument would give you a look similar to those posted by Julie.
