A Spacious Home with a Standout Alfresco Area

This beautiful home was designed for a family that has adult children. The parents were looking to have a space where they could comfortably relax and have small gatherings as they age.

While they didn’t have a specific vision in mind, they did know they wanted to bring the large alfresco area to life. We took their needs into consideration and went through many conceptual iterations to ensure the old flowed through to the new.

The alfresco doors are the highlight of the design. The exterior walls open up to allow a complete open space to the yard. The high pitch roof and skylights allow the alfresco to feel like a complete entity on its own. The existing kitchen was refurbished and a serving area was incorporated into the new BBQ area.

In order to fully utilize the large garden at the rear, we brought the outdoor setting inside. Adjustable louver panels and doors were installed to accommodate the change in weather. We designed additional garden spaces to allow for multiple groups to gather.

Thankfully, there were no major obstacles for this project aside from a small construction delay.

What a clever design! I love that it serves as an outdoor entertaining space, but can also be closed up to feel like a part of the house. The ceiling and skylights are a nice touch.

As a matter of interest , was there a reason why you had the solid wall on the side you did ? I'm no expert , but I think I would have reversed that -- currently , it 'opens' onto the driveway , but also the focus is more naturally towards the garage now too .

By having 'that' driveway side as a solid wall would have been preferable IMO -- aside from that , it is certainly a good indoor/outdoor space .

having already successfully used steel shed structures several times you may be interested in our latest project, based on a custom designed steel shed but built to residential home standards meeting all BCA, Basix and local council requirements with proper kitchen, bathroom and laundry...this shed is 10.5m x 7m with a steep asymmetrical roof and inside raked ceilings rising to over 3m ... the internal walls are not load bearing so size of rooms can be adjusted to suit but the building has been designed for three bedrooms (although we plan to use the space of two bedroomsas an alfresco area with opening walls) and bath, laundry living and kitchen ..our building is intended as a holiday house in an isolated area and costs include expenses that aren't needed in the suburbs and you should be able to build a similar sized structure as an owner builder for much less than we're spending because there's no power, water or sewerage on our steep site in a bushfire zone so the quote in my last post could be reduced to much less than $100,000 as i realised that you won't have our extra expenses... final costs would depend on your choice of finishes and how much of the work you can do yourself but price for our steel frame was only $17,000 plus $5000 labour to erect... we've chosen steel cladding for the outside because we prefer the look but there's no reason why you couldn't have something else and this photo shows progress to date pending internal walls and plasterboard lining etc

I'm going to thro a wobbly into this mix: Have you thought about going two storey so there is some outside space for boys to play? Looking at your site plan play is either in the pool or the street! Master bedroom, with all the robe you want upstairs and a kids free zone! Or boys rooms above as long has they do not own hob nail boots! Then do not use ALL the extra space on ground for your film works! Seriously this would give you some breathing space and some real outdoor living area to enjoy which you can do in Ipswich climate. Four beds separate bath rooms and stairs above with a laundry chute. Down stairs a real laundry (proportional to a five bed house) A powder room with shower for after pool. Your study of a size worthwhile and theatre room for family second sitting room as well as clients. The master can then have better sized robe, all the bits you want in ensuite including separate loo (lovely idea) but please on outside wall with window. Personally, I'm not one for two storey but in this tight site I think it would be much better. Good Luck, Margot
