I'd go with his choice, because even if it wasn't 'my' style, I'd rather feel like he's taking an interest and equally invested in our home together. Plus, if I'm being completely honest, I think his taste is probably better than mine. ;) He rarely has an opinion on anything house-related, so when he puts his foot down, I go along with it: and on each occasion, it's been exactly the right decision. Example: I wanted the whole house painted out in ecru and antique white because it looks awesome with oak floors and I'm kind of a minimalist. Hubby insisted on painting the lounge room in yellow. YELLOW. I thought he'd lost his mind... but I went with it, because I get my way 99.9% of the time, so why quibble about the 0.1%? He insisted that 'in Winter, you'll be glad we have this warm, cozy colour'. And you know what? Every Winter, I love that room. It's an odd duck compared to the rest of the house, but damned if it doesn't actually work surprisingly well. It'd definitely be too much to take as a house-wide theme - but contained as it is, it's pretty great.

Dear Marisa, Sorry to break the news to you, but your room is a "train wreck". Just TOO Many competing elements in this room. The last thing that this room needs is "Wall-Art"! This is a BEDROOM and a place that should be restful. All the elements in the room make for a vision of chaos. Firstly, move the TV opposite the bed. If you have room, house your TV, your music system and Apple TV box in the one area . Paint the unit the same colour as the walls. TV housed behind a door would be good. Blue and green or aqua and turquoise are shades are all serene colours, for walls and furniture both. All photos and mementos can be put in an album, thus clearing surfaces and resulting in a memory book to peruse at leisure. If you are a child of 8 to 9, the dolls, toys, cushion and a disney picture above the bed are okay, but not for a teenager or adult. Why do you need the refrigerator? Is it because you cannot eat and drink elsewhere? Best sleep comes when in a dedicated room. Separate eating, drinking, computer and TV from sleeping if at all possible. If, however, this room is a bed-sit, then you are stuck with multiple uses for this room. But I notice that there is no dedicated study/desk area. If you moved the white cupboard covered in unnecessary photographs, there would be space for a small bedside table with a reading lamp. Reading a book, for pleasure, before sleep, is conducive to good restorative sleep. My advice is, ditch the disney paraphernalia, put the caps in a drawer and generally de-clutter (surely you do not need toothpicks in your bedroom?) I suggest that you study photos of ELEGANT bedrooms - not fluro adolescent fantisies but classic, serene examples. Photos on Houzz are good, as are, photos on Etsy and Pinterest. Type in a query on Google images e.g. aqua bedroom images. Keep an open mind when looking. Consider painting the whole room. Consider placing pillows the whole width of the bed head, with pillowcases in shades of one colour. Behind the bed, install a curtain rail with a generous curtain of beautiful fabric ( check out fabric remnants online, especially in USA or visit Burnt Street, Seaforth fabrics in Sydney. You can often pick up expensive, beautiful fabrics at a fraction of the retail cost. Get ideas from Elle decor magazine, Architectural Digest and Verandah magazines online. Hi Sarah, hope you enjoyed your travels last night, that's something we have spent our lives doing plus living in different countries. Do look into the attic room/s they are lovely and the Velux skylights very unobtrusive, look great and if positioned correctly take care of venting any hot air, as I mentioned ours were pivoting ones and could be locked open in several positions. I much prefer these to dormer windows, you don't really notice them. The stairs were built off site and lifted into position and installed, built in. At the time we did ours a very good friend a builder did the same but just completely opened the whole ceiling space right out towards the gutters into a large bedroom play study area for his daughters, also using Velux windows. Glass ceilings, like Velux windows have been around for years, believe me I know, we're both getting older. Velux windows can be used as glass ceilings in opening and non opening configurations. I would love to see you keep the outdoor loo as well and updating the old shed into a new connecting space to the house, perhaps a glass breezeway. I will have another look at your plan again over the weekend. I love your front iron gate as well, auto sliding driveway gates work really well and would really fit with your carport. My brother in law put in a tall timber sliding gate at his last home, lovely cheers
